I present a short song, ‘ab aayee barkha bahaar sajnee’ from the film, ‘Sangeet Samrat Tansen, (1962). The song is rendered by Mohammed Rafi who sings for Bharat Bhushan in the role of Tansen. The song ends with aalaaps and sargam rendered by Manna Dey who sings for M Kumar in the role of Swami Haridas.
The song is not listed in HFGC probably because being a short duration of about 2 minutes, the gramophone record of the song was not released. The song is not included in the LP record of the film. SAREGAMA has also not released the mp3 clip of this song. So, the only source of the song is from the sound track of the film.

“Bhanwar”(1947) was directed by Madhu Patel for Chitra Bharati Limited, Bombay. This movie had Shameem, Balwant Singh, Nirupa Roy, Maya Devi, Majid, Masaood etc in it. HFGK mentions mukhdas of eight songs for this movie and leaves gaps indicating that there were more songs in the movie whose details are not available.

When I watched the abovementioned video, I was like just 35 actresses ? We in the blog must have hundreds of different actresses lipsyncing in Asha Bhonsle’s voice. This thought caught my imagination. So much so that I spent most of my waking time for the last three days in researching Asha Bhonsle songs picturised on various actresses. Not only that, I thought that this list that I come up with should be included in the blog century post number 20200. The fact that blog day number 6500 was also arriving served as a nice day for that blog century.
After three days of back breaking work, I arrived at a whopping number of 261 actresses who have lip synced in Asha Bhonsle’s voice in the blog. That done, I started to prepare the list of these 261 actresses with one song for each of them, including link of that blog post. I reached halfway after four hours and then I realised that putting up such a huge list of actresses and songs in one post was back breaking work not only for me as the poster, but also for the readers. So I decided that I should break down this huge list into smaller lists based on Alphabetical order. Let me present name of actresses whose names begin with A in one post, and repeat the same process with other actresses whose names begin with B, C, D…Z. Each article should carry an Asha Bhonsle song picturised on an actress whose name begins with the same letter who has not so far figured in the blog while lip syncing an Asha Bhonsle song.
That decided, I heaved a big sigh of relief as the workload now could be managed relatively easily. So here in this post which is the blog post number 20200 on 6500th day of existence for the blog, I am presenting the list of actresses with the letter A who have lip synced in Asha Bhonsle’s voice in the blog. Here is the list. Against each name, I have given an Asha Bhonsle song picturised on that actress, alongwith link of that post.
| Name of Actress | Asha Bhonsle Song lip synced by the actress | Name of movie (year) | Remarks |

| Aradhana | Dukki pe dukki ho ya satte pe satta (Satte Pe Satta) | Satte Pe Satte (1982) | |
We can observe that as many as 24 actresses whose name begin with A have lip synced in Asha Bhonsle’s voice in the blog. These actresses are well known names as well as less heard names. Well known names have sung in Asha Bhonsle’s voice in many songs, of course. Asha Parekh figures in 124 songs in the blog. 42 of these songs were sung by Asha Bhonsle.
There are videos of songs in the blog with Asha Bhonsle’s song where actresses are not identified. If actresses in these videos are identified then the list will add up. For example, Asha Bhonsle has sung two songs in “Alif Laila” (1953). Videos of these songs are available. These songs are Dilon ke shikaar ko kataar leke aayi hoon (Alif Laila) and Raaten pyaar ki beet jaayengi (Alif Laila). If knowledgeable readers help identify the lip syncers in these songs that may help us update our record.
Likwise there are songs where Asha Bhonsle lends her voice to several actresses whose names are not known. For example, there is the song Dukki pe dukki ho ya satte pe satta (Satte Pe Satta) where nearly six actresses (playing love interests of six brothers) lip sync in Asha Bhonsle’s voice. Same is the case in the song Main chali main chali dekho pyar ki gali(Padosan)(1968). In this song, Saira Bano, while cycling away with her sahelis sings in Lata Mangeshkar’s voice while all her half a dozen or so sahelis sing in Asha Bhonsle’s voice.
Coming to actresses with names starting with A, I wondered if Archana Puran Singh has sung any song in Asha Bhonsle’s voice. I could not find any. However I found an old timer actress with letter A, who is yet to figure in the blog while lipsyncing in Asha Bhonsle’s voice. That actress is Anju Mahendru.
New generation may wonder who she is. Old timers will know her as someone who hung out with Gary Sobers, the way Sharmila Tagore hobnobbed with Mansur Ali Khan Pataudi. She was also close friends with Rajesh Khanna as well. It is rumoured (I think she herself said it) that Rajesh Khanna proposed her in 1971 but she declined.
Anju Mahendru figures in the blog in one song of “Ganga Ki Sagandh”(1978) in Lata Mangeshkar’s voice. This song is Toone har raat muhabbat ki qasam khaayee hai (Ganga Ki Saugandh).
Here is the song that is sung by Asha Bhonsle which is picturised on Anju Mahendu. This song is from Ramsey Brothers’ “horror” movie called “Darwaaza”(1978). Naqsh Llayalpuri is the lyricist. Music is composed by Sapan Jagmohan.
I had watched this movie in Ranchi in front stall and “enjoyed” the movie while listening to the expert comments of front stallers. 🙂 They enjoyed every time the dreaded creature killed a victim. One of the victims whose death pleased the movie watchers no end was a very young debutant called Sunil Kapoor, who later on became well known by his new name of Shakti Kapoor.
I had no recollections of the songs of the movie. At that time I found the songs as poor as the movie itself. But now when I listened to this song, the song sounded quite a decent song to me.
Those days I did not know who Bhagwan was and who D K Sapru was. These people, who are considered legends by now are visible in the picturisation of this song. Imtiaz (brother of Amzad Khan) is also visible in the picturisation.
In addition to Anju Mahendru, there is one more dancer in this song. I request our knowledgeable readers to help identify her.
This post is the first post in the series of Asha Bhonsle singing for various actrors. Next post in this series will cover actresses whose names begin with B. Actresses who have lip synced in Asha Bhonsle’s voice in the blog are :
Bela Bose,Bimla Kumari, Bindu, Babita, Bina Rai, B Saroja Devi, Baby Naaz, Bharati (south), Bindiya Goswami and Bhavna Bhatt. I request our knowledgeable readers to suggest names of more such actresses who may have lip synced in Asha Bhonsle’s voice but who have not yet appeared in the blog singing in Asha Bhonsle’s voice.
With this song, we reach yet another century (202th century for the blog) on 6500th day of the blog. I take this opportunity to thank one and all for their support and patronage in various ways that has enabled this blog to keep moving on and on without taking any break. The last DOT day for the blog was on 25 december 2019. From that date onwards, 2323 days have passed without any break for the blog.

I am presenting a song mixed with taraana and sargam, ‘kanta dha kanta dha kanta dha’ from ‘Sangeet Samrat Tansen’ (1962). It is a jugalbandi between Tansen (Bharat Bhushan) as singer and the dancer Naaz Parveen (Sabita Chatterjee) in the court of Raja (D K Sapru) of Rewa Kingdom.
The story of the film is majorly concentrated around Tansen and his childhood friend, Hansa (Anita Guha). Tansen is devoted to Hansa as well as to his music. So, he is always caught in a dilemma. As a result, most of the time, Hansa gets separated from Tansen because of the calls from his musical duties. In a way, their relationship is akin to that of Radha and Shyam.
When Tansen decides to get married to Hansa for the first time, his Guru, Mohammed Ghous (David) instructs him to join the royal court on an invitation from Raja of Rewa. After a few months, when he gets permission from Raja of Rewa to get married to Hansa, Shahenshah Akbar (S N Tripathi) orders Raja of Rewa to send Tansen to be one of his ‘navratnas’ in his court. Even though Raja of Rewa decides to reject the demand inviting the potential wrath from Akbar, Tansen decides to reluctantly accept the invitation as rejecting that would create problems for Raja of Rewa. After joining the court of Akbar, Hansa joins Tansen and Akbar has planned for their marriage in Delhi. However, a misunderstanding between Hansa and Tansen about his relationship with dancer Naaz Parveen who is, in reality Tansen’s disciple, forces her to leave Tansen and return to the ashram of Swami Haridas. They are united only after Tansen faints while singing Raag Deepak which revives Akbar’s daughter (Preeti Bala). It is dancer, Naaz Parveen who clears Hansa’s misunderstanding about her and requests her to be with Tansen who is slated to sing Raag Deepak. After hearing this, Hansa accompanies Naaz Parveen and rushes to Delhi. Seeing an unconscious Tansen, she sings Raag Megh Malhar and revives him.
The context of the song under discussion is that Tansen wants to get married to his childhood friend, Hansa after his musical training gets over both from his Guru, Mohammed Ghous and Swami Haridas (M Kumar). Tansen pays a visit to his Guru, Mohammed Ghous to take his permission to marry Hansa. However, his Guru reveals that Raja Ramchandra of Rewa Kingdom has invited him to be the court singer. Adhering to his Guru’s instructions, Tansen joins the court of Raja of Rewa where he gets the title of ‘Sangeet Shiromani Tansen’. On this occasion, Naaz Parveen, the Raj Nartaki (Royal Dancer) from the court of the kingdom of Orchha gives a dance performance on the taraana rendered by Tansen. Later, it turns out to be a jugalbandi between the dancer and the singer.
The dance starts with a taraana of rhythmic syllables after which it gets switched over to a duet song between the singer and the dancer. Towards the end, once again, the singer switches over to taraana with faster rhythmic syllables which the dancer is not able to match and she loses her balance. Later, she becomes Tansen’s disciple.
In some places, I have not been able to decipher the rhythmic syllables in which cases I have only indicated them as ‘rhythmic syllables’.

“Deewana Hoon Pyar Ka” sung by Kishore Kumar is from the film “Qaid” (1975). The song was written by Maya Govind and composed by Nitin Mangesh.
Nitin–Mangesh were a Hindi film music composer duo active mainly during the 1970s and early 1980s, remembered as part of a generation of talented but relatively lesser-known Bollywood composers who worked during an era dominated by giants such as Laxmikant–Pyarelal, R. D. Burman, and Kalyanji–Anandji.
