Hullo to all in Atuldom

Todays’ song has Anand Bakshi and Anand Milind get together to give the movie goers Anand (joy!). it is from a movie which was directed by Hrishikesh Mukherjee for GP Sippy’s production – ‘Jhooth Bole Kauwa Kaate’ (1998). The movie stars Anil Kapoor, Juhi Chawla, Amrish Puri, Anupam Kher, Reema Lagoo and Sajid Khan.

Today’s song is from film ‘Shahkaar’ (1947). Very few people must have heard about this film. That is probably because, it was made in 1947- the year of India’s partition. As the year 1947 began, news was circulating about the partition. Like many other industries, film industry was also worried. There was an air of uncertainty. Who will stay and who will migrate was hotly debated in the privacy of homes, studios and clubs. People looked at each others with suspicion. Muslims were worried about their safety in India, in spite of the assurances by Gandhi and Nehru.

Today we remember the great son this soil Sardar Bhagat Singh (28th September 1907 – 23rd March 1931), on his birth anniversary.

We remember him for his bravery, courage, determination and supreme sacrifice made for a cause of the people, the people of this country.

Disclaimer: Thoughts presented in this song are not the thoughts of the author of this post. It is just a tool in the hands of the filmmaker to take the story of the film forward and explain why the central character professes ‘bachelorhood’. Readers are requested to enjoy the song.

“Man Pasand” (1980 – censored on 26-6-1980 and released on 11-7-1980) was among the first few movies whose music cassette was purchased by my father along with “Yaarana” when they hit the market. And since then I am a huge fan of their songs. Know almost all of them by heart.

By now it seems to have become a routine for me to make only cameos on this blog, triggered either by a memorable event (such as the blog’s tenth anniversary) or a “nudge” from another Atulite. 🙂

I will not seek to correct this impression – for the facts speak for themselves. I will also not make any excuse of “being busy” – that would only be an insult to people like Atul and Sudhir ji who manage to give so much time to the blog, despite so many demands on their time.

So no excuse – mea culpa. Today’s post is also a result of a nudge – this time from Peevisie’s Mom.

My affair with Tanuja (one of the many that I had during my school years) started when I first saw her in a film on Doordarshan. If I remember correctly, it was ‘Bahaaren Phir Bhi Aayengi’ from 1966. The song was “Aapke Haseen Rukh . . .”. The way this song is filmed, Tanuja looks such a pretty enchanting young lady, as the camera pans in on her with sunlight behind, the rays of the sun diffracting from her open tresses. At that time, I did not even know her name. Just that face, and the vision of sunlight reflecting from her hair, and I lost my heart to her.

When ‘Bawarchi ‘ was released in 1972, I had seen it on the big screen in the theatre with family. In this film, Hrishikesh Mukherji has woven a remarkable story of a joint family and their interesting interactions. The head of the family (a widower), his three sons, two daughters in law, third son still a bachelor, and three children. The roles of the two daughters in law were played by Durga Khote and Usha Kiran. Being quite un-exposed to cinema otherwise (it was school years for me) I was quite unfamiliar with these two ladies when I saw this film for the first time.

Hullo to all in Atuldom

I don’t know if anyone has noticed the current obsession that I am displaying. Many of my contributions to the blog in this calendar year have been to celebrate the birthdays of artists who are otherwise called “character artist” or “supporting cast”.

Has anyone tried to visualise what story “The Ramayana” would have been if there was no Dasharatha, Kaikeyi, Sugriva, Hanuman, Vibhishana or even Ravan. Can one think of “The Mahabharat” minus Duryodhana, Shakuni, Kunti, or any of the “supporting characters”? Where would “Sholay” be without Gabbar, or the fate of “Mr. India” without Mogambo. Can one think of “Parichay” minus the cute kids of the family, “Chupke Chupke” without Jijaji, “Golmaal” without Bhavani Shankar; “Deewar” minus THE MAA. That means all stories, be they the epics or modern tales, need characters which are good, bad, ugly or in-between, around the main characters for the story to be interesting.

दिल तोड़ने वाले, तुझे दिल ढूंढ रहा है
आवाज़ दे तू कौन सी नगरी में छुपा है

But maybe not. जिस नगरी में तुम चले गए हो, वहाँ से आवाज़ इधर नहीं आ सकती। The only sound that remains is the recordings available,

Now this song today has a very interesting peculiarity, that was brought to our group’s notice by Bakshish Singh ji. I will come that shortly.

फिर तेरी याद नए गीत सुनाने आई

Yes, it is a story of every day – a song plays and memories come by. Or sometimes, memories passing thru remind of a song that is so very dear to the heart. That is all that remains now – memories and songs playing hide and seek in the dimly lit bylanes of the mind.

The next song in this series comes from the 1976 film ‘Ladki Bholi Bhaali’. And incidentally this film is also making its debut on the blog today. That makes it three in a row today – 🙂 🙂 .
