Today’s song is from an old film ‘Ek Hi Raasta’ (1939).
This film was made by Sagar Movietone and was directed by a young Mehboob Khan. This was his last film with Sagar, because after this Sagar was merged with National studios and later on it was closed down forever. This proves that generally, family enterprises where it is a one man show, be it films or politics, does not last long. If the enterprise does not adapt to changes or does not learn from its mistakes, its downfall is sure. Mehboob Khan grew big with Sagar. Mehboob was influenced by Nehru’s ideology and was his staunch supporter. It was a coincidence that Nehru died in the afternoon of 27th May 1964 and within 12 hours, Mehboob Khan too died in the early hours of 28th May 1964.

This is the song, part of which is shot near to the Thajiwas glacier, near Sonamarg, Kashmir. This is the route going to Laddakh, travelling east of Srinagar. Further on this road falls Kargil area, about which many people have told me is much too beautiful to miss. Laddakh is a sight to behold too. I have missed both Laddakh and Kargil, but hope to visit in future, in-sha-Allah.

Today, April 29, 2023, is the 3rd Remembrance Day of Irrfan Khan, the actor par excellence. After Guru Dutt, I think, he was the only actor whose eyes spoke more than his dialogues.

Today’s song is from an obscure film called ‘Room No. 17’ from 1961.
This film is categorized as a ‘social’ film in the HFGK. I wonder on what basis it can be called a ‘social’ film. What I understand by ‘social’ category is when the film revolves around a family problem or a social custom. If not that, then at least the film should show a relationship crisis or an age old social evil or even a simple family dispute. But this film is nothing like this. The film story has 4 murders, 2 accidents, kidnapping, police encounter and multiple attacks by criminals. Embedded in all this there is a love story and a murder mystery. In my opinion, the film should have been classified either as a stunt/action film or a crime/mystery film.

It really has been a while– I do not follow the current Hindi films scene on a regular basis. I think this started in mid 1980s. One factor was that my life became quite mobile as far as my work situation was concerned. Moving to Bombay (now Mumbai) in 1987, then on to US in 1988, back in Delhi 1996, change of workplace two times, and then back again in the US in 2000. Back in Delhi 2009/10, and then more ongoing travel albeit shorter and less frequent.

Today’s song is a special song from the film ‘Captain India’ (1960).
Our regular readers may recall that just a few days ago, within this month, 2 songs having the same mukhda with different lyrics were posted on this Blog. The mukhda was “Nacho, Nacho, Nacho”. The first song to appear was from the dubbed film – ‘RRR’ (2022), which was posted and discussed superbly by our friend Gajendra Khanna ji on 3-4-2023. The second song with the same mukhda was from the film ‘Gogola’ (1966) and was posted and discussed by me on 17-4-2023.

Songs Repeated in Hindi Films – 27
– – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – –
Haan ji, yes. Reuse of songs in Hindi films goes back a long way. I had no inkling of this particular episode that goes back all the way to 1944. A very dear friend, Anoop ji Gadodia, pointed it out to me recently.
We have earlier presented songs of 30s, which have been used in later films. Examples are “Ik Bangla Bane Nyaara” – a song from the 1937 film ‘President’, which was later used in the film ‘Do Raaste’ of 1969. Then we have another song for the same year – “Babul Mora Naihar Chhooto Hi Jaaye” from the film ‘Street Singer’, which has been reused in the 1973 film ‘Aavishkaar’. The thing to note is that both these reuse events occurred decades after the original song was released.

I was not aware that there was film with the title ‘Rog’ (2005). Recently, I heard a song from the film for the first time and liked it. This led me to the film. I also found that there were couple of more songs which were also good to my ears. Box Office India report has categorized the film as ‘disaster’. That explains as to why this film was not much talked about. Even then, I watched this film mainly for the songs and for Irfan Khan.

What is going on today? I am sure this question is worrying the minds of quite a few if not many or all regulars of this blog. Atul ji seems to be in a big hurry today. Seven posts already since his first good morning call at 5 am. Aha, so getting to the century number it seems. Yeah, ok, that’s it, he wants to complete the century, and make the century post today. But why? What is the tearing need? Is there a birthday not known to anybody? Is it a special day for someone on the bandwagon or in the industry? The anniversary page has no listing for today. ये क्या हो रहा है? क्या चल रहा है?
