“Do Raaste” was one of the earlier hits of Rajesh Khanna. This movie, like most hits of Rajesh Khanna, had many hit songs. In fact, I am coming round to the view that many movies of those days became hits thanks to their music and the credit went to the Hero, often undeservedly. There are people who think that Rajendra Kumar movies were hits thanks to the music of his movies, and not because of his tragic roles.

My regular readers may have noticed that I classify my songs based on the place where the song is picturised. Thus we have had car song, rail song, even elephant song, in this blog.

This particular song is a bathroom song by my definition because it is sung in a bathroom. Unlike most bathroom songs which are sung by amateur bathroom singers, this bathroom song is sung by no less a singer than Lata. What is more, this must be one of the sweetest and most melodious songs that Lata must have sung in her career. At least that is what I have always felt about this song.

“Arth” was an art movie or parallel movie as low budget movies were described as in those days. Apart from the realistic story line which were supposedly based on the life of Mahesh Bhatt, the movie had some nice ghazals. It was one movie that helped popularise ghazals which was a welcome development considering that the other option in Bollywood filmy music those days used to be “disco” songs.

Jaidev served as assistants to leading music directors of his era for most of his career. On a few occasions that he got to compose music as an independent music director, he did a very good job. But it takes a lot more than just the ability to compose great music. “Jhanak Jhanak Paayal Baaje” was a musical blockbuster of its time. This movie had many songs that broke new ground in the history of Bollywood filmy music.

One of the memorable songs from this movie was this duet sung by Lata and Hemant Kumar. And just notice the lyrics. Hasrat Jaipuri, considered a shayar, has written this song where you cannot find any trace of urdu shayari. The words are written in simple semi rural dialect of Hindi spoken in UP.

It is a beautiful song from a 1981 movie called Dhanwaan. Rajesh Khanna was making yet another gallant attempt to regain his lost position, Rakesh Roshan was making yet another attempt to revive an almost non existent career and Reena Roy was acting in yet another sensitive role ( unlike how she began her career).

This song is a very special song. Not only is it the oldest song (1948) posted in this blog so far , this is one song that very few people may have heard. This song was composed for the movie “Anokhi Ada” (1948). As many bollywood music fans may be aware, this movie was a musical blockbuster full of memorable songs.

This particular song was excluded from the movie at the editing stage. As a result, this song died an untimely death, and people forgot all about it.
