DIDI, a social film of 1948 was Produced by Navbharat Films, Bombay and Directed by Mukund Masurekar. The unique thing that struck me was that Mukund Masurekar was not only the Director but also gave music for the film. Recently, Tommydan55 has uploaded the film PREM KAHAANI (1937) with some cleaning and restoration works relating to both the video and the audio. The full film is here. The result was that I got motivated to watch the movie without much of the strain on my eyes. What a film! As against my expectation of a slow moving story of the film which was my experience in most of the films of the 30s, this film was different. The slick editing of the film ensured that the story moved in a pace comfortable for viewing. This may be the reason as to why I could watch the movie in one sitting which I seldom do especially in respect of old classic Hindi films of 30s and 40s. The DVD/VCD of the movie is of 1 hour 30 minutes which means that the film has been heavily edited for DD/VCD including a couple of songs. But I did not find much issue with the continuity of the story.

The moment the image of Ameerbai Karnataki comes to my mind, I remember some of her most popular songs, mostly full of pathos, melancholy, and devotion. In fact, the most popular songs of her singing career come from these genres. She started her filmy career in 1934 as an actor-singer but realising that the potential for career as a playback singer was bright after the system of playback singing was introduced in Bombay film industry in 1937, she confined herself mainly to playback singing thereafter. After her songs in ‘Kismet’ (1943) became very popular, for the next five years or so, she remained one of the top playback singers. Of the total of around 375 songs she sang during her filmy career, more than 50% was accounted for during 1943-48.

yes, bahut yaad aaye. . . that voice – the magic, the magnetism, the feeling of surreal contentment that descends into the being, and ensconces it with a joyous delight. It is a voice, that now lives only in our memories, or in the ethereal sound waves. The memories are such, they will never be detached till the breaths last. And the sound – they say in our culture that sound is forever; it lives in the space for all times to come. And so will this voice. This voice – of Rafi Sb. This voice that went to sleep 36 years ago, today. 36 years seem to be a long time, a third of a human life already. But it seems just like, well, recently. And the affinity and the magic of this voice has only deepened with time.
Remembering Rafi Sb today, with all humility and respect and love.

The ghazal ‘na kisi ki aankh kaa noor hoon’ has been embroiled in a debate about its authorship. This ghazal became popular and well known when Mohammed Rafi sang it for the film ‘Laal Qila’ (1960). The ghazal was credited to Bahadur Shah Zafar, the last Mughal emperor. In fact, this ghazal was picturised on Bahadur Shah Zafar, this role played by M Kumar. The sentiment expressed in the ghazal fitted very well with the status of Bahadur Shah Zafar as the last Mughal king whose writ did not work beyond the walled city of Delhi. It was this that probably led many to believe that the ghazal was the expression of his inner feelings of sorrow and self-pity.
