Genius of Jaidev – 26
—————————

Out of Ten songs of 1957 film ‘Anjali’, Seven, including this one, will be covered now. One more Asha solo and one humorous song by S Balbir and Vinod Desai are already in line. I was fanatically looking for a song ‘Lo chori pakadi gayee’ by Asha, Meena and Usha from one musical family along with Sudha Malhotra. (later on she became ‘Motwane’) And ‘Whoopieee …’ Sudhir-ji promssed me that song, so with these three now pending songs, all the songs of ‘Anjali’ will be covered soon. (Hari Ichchha Baliyasi.).

Two important birthdays coming together today – 8th September. One is music director S Mohinder and the second is Asha Bhonsle. These two have created a number of songs together. Some memorable, and others, like this one, need to be rediscovered for their sheer beauty and simplicity of pleasure. During our visit to Bombay last month, Bakshi ji and I had the good fortune to spend a whole afternoon with S Mohinder ji.  A session that lasted almost four hours – it was a wonderful trip down the memory lane, for him, as well as for us.  That meeting itself is a detailed writeup that is waiting in the drafts list.  For this occasion, I am quoting two episodes where S Mohinder ji remembered Asha ji very fondly.

Genius of Jaidev – 25
———————————-

In this series, we are trying to cover all the songs from 1957 film ‘Anjali’, which happens to be Jaidev’s third released film. Prior to this, he had only one released film in each of the prior two years; 1955 – ‘Joru Ka Bhai’, and 1956 – ‘Samundari Daku’. Not at all a successful entry in film music world. He had to wait till 1961 and the film ‘Hum Dono’ to be recognized as a great composer, capable to catch attention of classes and masses. However, to the true good music lovers (including me), all of his tunes right from his first film are gems.

Genius of Jaidev – 22
—————————–

Normally, a music director superbly composing smooth, not noisy, but melodious tunes with Indian classical music base, Jaidev has composed a western music based foot tapping song as well. May be it was the demand of the film scenario!! And who is among the more adept artists to sing such songs? Asha, of course. So here it is a song from Jaidev in the voice of Asha but in an entirely different style. Just compare this to the previous posted song of Asha from the same film, same lyricist and by the same music director.

Genius of Jaidev – 21
—————————
My last song in the ‘Genius of Jaidev’ series was posted on 6th January 2015. So it is after a gap of more than half a year that I resume the series with Asha’s song from the 1956 film ‘Samundari Daku’. Three(actually four, as ‘Dil Jawan Hai Aarzoo Jawan’, both solo by Talat and Talat-Asha duet are posted as one posting) out of six songs of this movie are already there on our blog. This one is from the remaining two solos of Asha.

The decade of the 1950s is called “The Golden 50s”. Within the decade 1957 was the brightest Diamond. The year brought a deluge of meaningful, entertaining and musical films. The Indian audience truly bathed in Ecstasy and exhilaration to enjoy such a variety of joyous feast of optical and aural treat !

After film music became popular among the masses, Non film songs were relegated to the background. They not only became difficult to locate, but also became unknown for the newer generation. Compared to the fast, foot tapping songs of today, NFS were very slow and poetic. In most of the NFS ( except a few Jagmohan songs),the use of orchestra was not even worth a mention. Hardly 2-3 instruments were used in most of these songs.

Here is a song from film Sindbad the sailor-52.

The name of Sindbad will remind you the storybooks we have read in our childhood. Sindbad, Allauddin, Alibaba, Birbal-Akbar, Haatimtai, Gulebakavali, Vetal Pachhisi and many such books have entertained the growing children for many generations in the past. I do not know what today’s generation young children read. But then, do they read at all ? I guess these children see the stories on TV-not the ones I have mentioned here. Their Heroes are different.

Today’s song is from film Khazanchi-58. It is a very interesting and foot tapping song by Asha Bhonsle-The Inimitable.

For senior readers of this Blog, the name Khazanchi may ring a bell and they may remember the iconic film Khazanchi of the 1941, made by Pancholis in Lahore. That film had changed the HFM for ever and freed it from the rut of Theatrical, classical, boring songs, which actually sounded the same despite being from different films !
