Before she burst on to the Bollywood scene with C.I.D. (1956) and Pyaasa (1957), Padma Bhushan Waheeda Rehman starred in two movies each in Telugu and Tamil including, as the second heroine, in the D. Yoganand directed Anjali Devi-A. Nageswara Rao starrer 1955 Telugu production Jayasimha. It was later dubbed in Hindi by P. Ramesh Naidu and released as Jai Singh in 1959.

In the late 60s, there was a time when I would watch one Hindi film almost every week-end in the theatre. The one aspect of the films which used to irritate me at that time was actors suddenly going into singing mode thus interrupting, like a speed breaker on the highway, the smooth flow of the narration. Some people would even walk out of the theatre as soon as the song started on the screen and come back only after the end of the song. Of course the audience would not do that when a song is melodious and well picturised.

After Malika-e-Tarannum Noor Jehan left India post-Partition, Suraiya (1929-2004) was the undisputed Singing Superstar of Bollywood for the next several years. It was not until Salma Agha blazed all-too-briefly like a meteor on the Bollywood horizon in Nikaah (1982) that anyone even reminded us of the great diva.

Today (25 july) is the death anniversary of G S Kohli. He is one of those unsung music directors who deserved to get far more opportunities than what he actually got. In the few movies where he gave music, he has created awesome music. Who can forget the music of movies like “Faulaad” (1963), “Shikari” (1963) and “Namaste Jee” (1965).

The movie had Manoj Kumar, Mala Sinha, Shashikala,Mukri, Jayant, David Abraham, Jeevankala, Kanhaiyyalal, D.K.Sapru, Achala Sachdev, Rita Pandit, S.K.Prem, Keshav Rana, Ajit, Sitaram, Mohan Jerry, Harbans Darshan, M.Arora etc in it.
