If I were to write that the ‘M’ in Mukesh stands for ‘Magic’, I am sure there will be very few who would disagree. This song – another wonderful duet by Mukesh and Asha Bhosle, is a magic colored with these two voices. “Mem Sahib” (1956) was a lovely movie starring Kishore Kumar, Meena Kumari and Shammi Kapoor. This movie was a fun movie which was great to watch. And the music was wonderful.

In my younger days, the name of the film FUNTOOSH (1956) sounded to me a bit bizarre. I had also heard people using this Hinglish lingo as adjectives in different context. I had no occasion to watch this movie but judging (or misjudging) from the name of the film, I thought that it was a comedy movie and the song ‘ye meri topi palat ke aah’ was a pointer to that. It was only later when I heard ‘dukhi man mere’ I felt that the film was of a different genre.

Today (14th february), otherwise known as Valentine’s day, is also the birthday of Jaan Nisaar Akhtar. Jaan Nisaar Akhtar’s name suggests that he may be a shayar who mostly wrote songs on the themes of husn o ishq.
Jaan Nisaar Akhtar could in fact write light hearted songs as well. Here is a fun timepass song from “Rickshawaala” (1960). This song is sung by Asha Bhonsle and Geeta Dutt. N Datta is the music director.

It has intrigued me as to why Jaan Nisar Akhtar, who joined the film industry as a lyricist in early 50s was not as successful as his contemporaries such as Sahir Ludhianvi, Majrooh Sultanpuri and Shakeel Badayuni among others. I came to know about him as a lyricist when I bought a 78 RPM records of YASMIN (1954) in early 70s.

In Hindi movies, most artists tend to get typed cast and most people can only visualise one standard kind of performance from them. When it comes to Hindi movie music, for instance, what kind of music does one expect when Bharat Vyas is the lyricist and S N Triptahi is the music director ? We expect songs that are either bhajans or semi classical songs.
