(Debutant Movie-‘Double Cross-1938’)
Today I am presenting a song from a movie of 1938. Regulars on this blog will be surprised to see a write-up from me presenting a song from a movie which is around eighty-seven years old. I have been sharing older songs but this must be the oldest of them. I had come across this song more than a year back.
This song is from the movie ‘Double Cross’ from the year 1938. Most of us are aware of the movie titled ‘Double Cross-1977’. This movie of 1977 has a song that is part of my childhood and I had shared that song on this blog. Adding songs from movies with same title is one of my missions, and that is the reason for this post as well. With this post ‘Double Cross’ of 1938 joins the ‘Double Cross’ of ‘1977 🙂 on the blog.
“Double Cross-1938” was directed by M. Bhawnani for ‘Bhawnani Productions, Bombay’. M. Bhawnani was also the story writer of this movie. The cast of this movie had Bimla Kumari, S.B. Nayampalli, Faity (Fatty?) Prasad, Ameena, David, Kishore, A.S. Gyani, R. Dilawar, Master Hussain, Rai Mohan and others. This movie has eight songs as listed in Geet Kosh Vol-I (1931-1940). However the lyricists name is not known for this movie. Music for this movie was composed by Pt Badri Prasad and Walter Coffman was the ‘orchestra organizer’(as mentioned in Geet Kosh). Singer’s names for all the eight songs are mentioned in Geet Kosh. They are Gauhar (Bikaner), Bimla Kumari, Bashir Qawwaal, Faity Prasad, and Ameena.

Today’s song is from an exceptional Hindi Horror film – House No. 13..1991.
When you say Horror film, only one name comes to mind prominently and that is Ramsay Brothers. They became famous for making C grade horror films, for the C grade audience. The quality of their horror films was not worth discussing, nevertheless, they did good business. Not that such attempts were not made earlier by anybody else. But Overall, Horror films in Hindi Did not have the class it attained in horror films made in western world, especially Hollywood. Even Master Bhagwan had tried his hand at making a horror film – Bhedi Bangla-1949.
Today’s film was made by DVF Investments, Madras. It was completely shot in the Vauhini Studios of madras Actually the film was a remake of the hit Tamil film ” Pathimoonam Number Veedu”-1990. When I saw the credits of the Tamil film, I was surprised that it was directed by Baby, the screenplay was by Baby and the story was also by Baby. We are not used to seeing such confusing names. Not knowing if this ‘Baby’ was a Male or a Female, I found that the full name was A.G.Baby and HE was a well known director of offbeat Tamil films. The producer was G.A.Sheshgiri Rao. This film was released in theatres on 16-8-1991.

Pancham’s Music – Eighties-to-Nineties (1981-1994…) Duets-1
Welcome all to this post, where we are covering a duet song composed by Rahul Dev Burman fondly known as Pancham. I had earlier presented Pancham’s compositions from the eighties. With this post, we will be listening to duet songs composed by Pancham from the eighties and subsequently the nineties.
The song being covered in this article is from the movie ‘Romance-1983’. This movie was another Kumar Gaurav movie that had its title in English, like his film ‘Love Story-1981’ followed by ‘Star-1982’, and ‘Lovers-1983’.
‘Romance-1983’ was produced and directed by Ramanand Sagar for his home productions ‘Sagar Art Enterprises, Bombay’. This movie was passed by Censor Board on 12.10.1983. The cast of this movie included Shammi Kapoor, Kumar Gaurav, Poonam Dhillon, with Saeed Jaffrey, Helena Luke, Sushma Seth, Prema Narayan, and Tom Alter. They were supported by Viju Khote, Jugnu, Manmauji, Samrat Kapoor, Dr. Madan Kataria, Randhawa, Jawahar Bhan, Chandan, Yogee, Jitu Vyas, and Moolchand. This movie introduced Christopher, Lilliput, and Jillian. Raj Babbar, Ranjeeta and Ram Sethi make friendly appearance in this movie.

This movie’s story takes place on a cruise ship. Cruise ship travel is still out of affordability area for the common people in India. I do not know anyone who does this type of travel or holidays. The way of life involving Yachts, Marinas and Cruise ships is very foreign to India. I saw one cruise ship in Liverpool. I saw some people who were from that ship roaming around the harbour area, with the Beatles museum, and the eateries, a very ordinary boat ride around the inner harbour/backwaters. They stood out as they were not casual tourists. At least I thought so, as I pride myself on my powers of observation and differentiation.

In Hindi films, in addition to heroines, there would be one or two secondary female characters. For examples, in the love triangle involving the hero, there would be ‘other woman’. To create a rift between hero and the heroine, there will be a vamp. Then, Hindi films’ model box office formula stories also require female characters of seducer, westernised women of high society, courtesans, hero/heroine’s sister and friend etc. There were some popular actresses who were known for doing such character’s roles like Kuldeep Kaur, Shashikala, Nishi, Aruna Irani, Helen, Bindu, Faryal, Naaz, Nazima and many more during 1950s to 1970s. There were some lesser known actresses doing such roles, one of them being Lolita Chatterjee. This diva from Kolkata with her glamorous look, drew the attention of Hindi film makers during mid-1960 to mid-1970.

#The Decade of Eighties – 1981 – 1990 #
———————————————————————
Today 27th November 2025 is the seventy-third birth anniversary of Composer Singer Bappi Lahiri (27.11.1952-15.02.2022). On this occasion as a tribute to him I am presenting a song from the movie ‘Sinhaasan-1986’.
I got to listen to this song earlier this year when I was still at Vadodara and was travelling from the city to my workplace around 47 kms from the city. I had earlier presented filmography of Bappi Lahiri for his Hindi Films from the 1970s and also for few years of the 1980s. However I did not include it in my series of Bappi Lahiri songs where I had presented songs that are part of my memory till 1985, because this song did not fall in that category.
Today’s movie ‘Sinhaasan-1986’ was directed by Krishna who also produced it for ‘Padmalaya Studio, Madras’. So this is one of those movies of actor Jeetendra where he was a part of many films coming from the southern part of the country. Bappi Lahiri too was the regular music composer for such films. I have not watched this movie, so can’t say much about it. However it seems to be a ‘fantasy’ movie. The cast of this movie has Jeetendra, Jaya Prada, Pran, Kader Khan, Mandakini, Shakti Kapoor, Bharat Bhooshan, Dr Shreeram Lagoo, Amjad Khan, Sujit Kumar, Gulshan Grover, Gurbachan Singh, Praveen Kumar, Waheeda Rehman, Radha and others.

Rest in Peace – Dharmendra (8/12/1937 – 24/11/2025)
During last week I have written posts of two Dharmendra -Hema Malini songs, and as I said, youtube was throwing up more such songs at me. I have saved many songs now featuring Dharmendra. Some of these are outdoor songs, showing refreshing locations, like riverside, mountains, trees etc.
Dharmendra has left this mortal world, where everything is mortal. We can hope that some memories will remain immortal till this “faani” intelligent humanity’s existence. So “Lafaani” is nothing. Dharmendra himself was among many things, an urdudaan, and wrote shayari in urdu. During his heydays as a star, he appeared shy of media. Only lately he has been giving some interviews and appearing on TV shows. That is when the real personality has come to light.

‘Aa Jaa Sanam’ (1975) was produced by S A Mehmood and was directed by Yusuf Naqvi. The cast included Feroz Khan and Tanuja in lead roles supported by Deven Verma, Shabnam, Sulochana Chatterjee, S N Banerjee, Shivraj, Mukri, Meenaxi, S A Baker, Kalyani Bai etc.
I have recently watched the film for the first time and I am surprised that it is shot in ‘Black and White’ for a 1975 released film by which time almost all the Hindi films were made in colour. Obviously, the film must have got held up for a long time before it was released. I guess that the film may have been shot around mid-1960s going by the trends of costume used by Feroz Khan who is seen with narrow bottom pants. By the starts of 1970, the fashion of bell-bottom pants was seen in many films. Also, the film has all three male voice songs of Mohammed Rafi whereas after the post-Aradhana (1969) period, Kishore Kumar would have got at least one song for the film if not more because the film distributors normally used to insist.
