The Voice of Mukesh #23

Wow, probably the best specimen of a ‘roothna – manaana’ song, if ever there was one. And done with such merriment and such a ticklish and playful performance by both the parties involved. I am glad the video of this song is available. Even after 66 years, the effect of this song and its visual has such a rollicking effect. I am sure you are going to love this song.

In Mukti (1977), Shashi Kapoor and Vidya Sinha play a happily married couple, till he is framed for murder and thus gets capital punishment. Thinking that he is dead she relocates to Bombay, where she meets the local goon, who helps the lonely “widow” and her daughter settle down. This other man is played by Sanjeev Kumar. In this song he seems to be drinking so that he can feel brave enough to admit his love to his adored one.

I have mentioned in the past that the “puraani filmon ke geet” programme of Radio Ceylon from 7-30 to 8 AM used to be a very “boring” programme for youngsters like me during late 1960s and all of 1970s. I had become a big fan of Kishore Kumar after I heard his song “Mere saamne waali khidki mein” from “Padosan” (1968) and I wondered why the oldtime singers would not sing like Kishore Kumar.
