The 25th of October is an important date for Hindi film music lovers. In fact, not just for them but for lovers of Urdu poetry too. For it is the anniversary of passing away of one of the industry’s foremost lyricists, Sahir Ludhianvi, who was highly regarded not just for lyrics but also for his poetry. In fact it was his poetry that brought him recognition early on – he just extended it to the film industry.

Today’s song is from the film Jagirdar-1937. The film was made by Sagar Movietone.

In the first decade after the Talkie Era started, Sagar Movietone was one of the major film making companies in Bombay. The Desai family, along with Dr. Ambalal Patel, were originally in Film Distribution business, but decided to enter the actual film production. Today 13th of October is a rather sad date for fans of Bollywood music. It was on this date in 1987 that we lost a gem of the industry to “KAAL”. Its 30 years already and we are yet to find an entertainer like him. We still don’t have a singer, actor (brilliant in comedy), composer, song-writer, and finally a producer-director like him. Our own Kishore Kumar.

It had a star cast of Ashok Kumar, Raj Babbar, Raj Kiran, Rameshwari, Kaajal Kiran, Shashikala, Dina Pathak, Madan Puri etc. Songs were written and composed by Ravindra Jain. The uncertainties of life, in some way, always gives us happy as well as sad moments and surprises as well. The journey of life keeps on going on and on still, like that only. . . We never know how things are going to happen around us and what ‘life’ has there in store for us with every new day coming.

All exports to Germany and Japan were banned. Foreign travel came under Government microscope. Imports were restricted to only essential goods. Raw film stock came under Government control (and naturally became available freely in black market at exorbitant price). Taking advantage of the situation, Government declared that those film production houses who help Government in its war efforts, by making films with pro Govt. themes, would get raw film on priority.
