Today’s song is from the film “Uljhan” (1942). This was the first of the three same title films. The second came in 1975 and the third was in year 2000. This was the second film by Acharya Art Productions, floated by director N R Acharya. This was after he left Bombay Talkies, to chart out his own path, without either following the splinter group led by S Mukherjee or remaining with the rest of Bombay Talkies staff.

Today’s song is from the film Jwar Bhata-44. It is an important film of the 40’s, because it was the Debut film of Dilip Kumar.
In Hindi film industry, the “Trimurti”of Raj, Dev and Dilip dominated the decades of late 40s, 50s and the 60s- a period of about 25 years in the Golden Age of Hindi films. These three were the most popular, most talked about and the most ‘ín demand’ actors when they were in full form. Each one had a dedicated fixed audience for their films. There were others equally,if not better, actors in this period like, Ashok Kumar, Motilal,Balraj Saqhni, Sanjeev Kumar etc, but these three were different.

Today’s song is from the film Dr.Kumar-44. It was a film made by Minerva Movietone and it was directed by a multi faceted debutante, Kishore Sharma. I tried hard to find out information about Kishore Sharma and I was pleased to get a full page article, with photos, on Kishore Sharma, somewhere on the Internet. But when I started reading it, I realised that this person was a different one. Born in the mid 1950s, he was a well known Punjabi film actor. I was not only disappointed, but I also got a hearty laugh, that a person who writes on different artistes causing the ” same name confusions”, got confused himself with a same name actor ! Ha Ha !!

Today’s song is from film Raaj Tilak-1958.
This was a S.S.Vasan film from his Gemini Pictures, Madras. Film Raaj Tilak was a remake of the original popular film in Tamil-“Vanji Kottai Valiban”( The youth from Vanji Fort). It was loosely based on the famous adventure novel, “The Count of Monte Cristo”, written by Alexander Dumas and first published in 1844. Its Telugu version was titled “Vijay Kota Veerudu”and the Hindi version was Raaj Tilak.
AVM and Gemini, the two giants from Madras were keen on making Bi-Lingual (Tamil-Hindi/Tamil-Telugu,Telugu-Hindi) or Tri-lingual (Tamil-Telugu-Hindi) films to capture all the three big markets. Southern bosses took pleasure in engaging artistes from Bombay and in return Bombay artistes were happy to work in southern films, because they were disciplined, punctual and worked methodically. Their payments, staying arrangements and the treatment to Hindi artistes was very satisfying.

Today’s song is from film Pattharon ka Saudagar-1944. The film was made by Minerva Movietone. It was a Costume drama, directed by a Debutant Director Shorey Daulatlavi, who was earlier a Cinematographer with Minerva. Sohrab Modi was not known to be a generous person or one who encouraged Talent development in his staff. All his decisions were made on the basis of financial considerations. No wonder, he paid this novice quite a low wage. After this film, Daulatlavi got attached to Navyug Pictures and directed three more films, namely Din Raat-45, Paro-47 and Saajan ka Ghar-48.

Today’s song is from a film ‘Dharti ke Lal’-46, made by Indian People Theatre Association – formed on 25th May 1943. The film was directed by K.A.Abbas. The music was by Ravishankar. For 10 songs, written by a team of 4 Lyricists, music was composed by Ravi Shankar. Ravi Shankar (7-4-1920 to 11-12-2012) gave music only to 5 Hindi films, composing 48 songs – Neecha Nagar-46, Dharati ke lal-46, Anuradha-60, Godan-63 and Meera-79. Few songs from films Anuradha and Godan were good and popular, otherwise, in my opinion, his music was absolutely average. It never impressed me.

Today’s song is from an obscure film Hamara Sansar-45. It was a film made by Prakash Pictures, whose 2 Mythological films – Bharat Milap-42 and Ram Rajya-43, had become super duper hit films of that era. This branded Prakash Pictures as experts in Mythological films. Film Hamara Sansar-45 had actually followed another social film Police 44, but both films failed to continue the Hit parade of the two earlier successes. Prakash never wanted to be stamped or labelled as a film company of any particular Genre, so they decided to continue making social films, till they made the 3rd of the ” Shri Ram” series film few years later. They made film Raam Baan-48, with the same lead pair, but this film failed miserably due to various reasons.

Today’s song is from Dolti Naiya-1950. This film was made by Shaan E Hind Pictures, Bombay. It had music by Pt.Ram Prasad Sharma. The film’s 10 songs were written by a record number of 8 Lyricists and were sung also by 8 singers. In those days, it must have been a record, I guess. The cast of the film was Amarnath, Nigar Sultana, Shyama Dulari, Veena Kohli, Cuckoo, Bhudo Advani, Mukri, Mirza Musharraf, Munshi Munakka and others.
