This article is his 600th writeup in the blog.

Today’s song is from film Aandhi-40. The film was directed by Dinesh Ranjan Roy, music was by K.C.Dey and this song is sung by Pankaj Mallik and Radha Rani.

There is a reason why I selected this song. I wanted a song sung by Radha Rani, so that I get an opportunity to settle the issue of multiple Radha Ranis. ” Same name confusion ” is very common in the world of Hindi cinema. Luckily, the confusion existed only between 1931 and 1960. There are many many cases of same name Directors, Music Directors, Singers and Actors. Information on all names is extremely difficult to come by. Still I managed to write on 15 pairs of Same name Artistes in 3 articles and tried to clarify the confusions.

Today’s song is from a lesser known film ‘Pehla Pehla Pyar’ (1958).  Made by National Cine Corporation, it was produced by Daljit and directed by the veteran Nanubhai Vakil.

As we all know, in the early era of films – both silent and talkie, many actresses came from the traditional singing families (read tawaiafs). Average to good looks and ability to sing tolerably were their main qualifications. Many of these girls joined film line for two reasons. One – it gave them name, fame and money and the more importantly second – they tried to catch a big fish to marry. Many of them succeeded in this and we can see many examples of such marriages and live-in relationships of these girls in the film line. Gujarati producers and directors were in the forefront in this matter.

Today’s song is from film ‘Baghdad Ka Jaadu’ (1956). The HFGK is silent on the singer names, but MD is indicated as Shafi M Naagari.

The name of the city of Baghdad became famous all over the world after the Arabian Night stories became popular in almost all languages of the world. There was an air of mystery around the city where many or most stories are told by Princess Scheherzade to the Sultan Shahryar. These are said to be 1001 stories, each told in parts every night by her to delay her death. These stories were first published in English in 1706 and in quick time became extremely popular throughout the world.

Wandering into the world of movies of 1930s and 40s gives me immense pleasure. Digging for difficult to find information about old films, directors, music directors, singers or actors is an interesting challenge for me.While on a chase for such information, I frequently come to dead ends and then have to seek another road to gaining knowledge. It is very sad that in our country, documentation about films of 1930s and 40s is very poor.

Today(21st August 2017) is the last Monday of the holy month of Shrawan, in the Southern, Western and some Eastern states of India. For the rest of India the Saawan month had ended on the 7th August itself. Today’s Shiv bhajan is from the film Shri Ganesha janma-1951.

HAPPY INDEPENDENCE DAY to all our readers. May the 70th Anniversary of India’s Independence bring happiness, prosperity and peace to people of this great nation.

On this occasion, I present to you a Marching Patriotic song, in praise of the Motherland, from the film ‘Sipahsalaar’ (1956). Sipahsalaar means Chief of Army or Commandant . The name of this film is not well known because the lead actor, the composer or the director were not famous at that time. I said ‘ that time ‘ because in the next one year, this film’s hero – Shammi Kapoor would come in a complete makeover of appearance (without his funny unbecoming moustache) and style of acting with the film ‘Tumsa Nahin Dekha’ (1957). Later on, he wrote a glorious chapter in the history of Indian cinema.

Today’s Shiv Bhajan is for the 4th Shraavan Monday – as celebrated in south, west and some eastern states of India. This bhajan is from film ‘Shuk Rambha’ (1953), made by Chandrakala Pictures and is produced and directed by Dhirubhai Desai. The lead actors were Anjali Devi (from south) and Bharat Bhushan. In the cast of this film, you will find a name Rajkumar. Most ‘knowledgeable’ sites and writers treat this actor same as the famous dialogue master Raaj Kumar ‘Jaani’. However, this is not correct. This Rajkumar is different.

Today’s song is from a film called ‘Shiv Kanya’ (1954). The title may surprise some readers. Did Bhagwan Shiv ji have a daughter? Some people may brush it off thinking that it is yet another fruit of the fertile imagination of the “story department” of the production house. Can’t blame them either, because film makers are known experts in creating close relatives of popular film characters. Some examples are ‘Son of Aladdin’ (1939), ‘Daughter of Hatimtai’ (1940 and 1955) or even ‘Son of Zimbo’ (1966). Poor Alladin or Hatimtai would not be even knowing that they had a son or a daughter !

However, as far as mythological film subjects are concerned, there is absolutely no need to imagine or cook up stories, because the old scriptures like Puraanas provide varied situations for making films. That is how there is a film called ‘Krishna Arjun Yuddh’ in 1934, 1945 and 1971, based on a story from Bhagwat Mahapuraan. We also have ‘Ram Hanuman Yuddh’ in 1957 and 1975, based on Valmiki Ramayan. There was even a strange sounding film called ‘Shankar, Seeta, Anusuya” in 1965, made on a story from Garud Puraan and then there was a film called ‘Vish Waman ‘ (1936) based on Waman Puran.

When I first came across this film ‘Shiv Kanya’ in the mid 50s, I was perplexed, because I was not aware of Shiv Ji having a daughter too ! I knew about Kartikeya and Ganesh. Then I looked into a book ‘Stories from Puraanas’ and I learnt about it. Stories in Puraanas have sometimes slightly different versions in different Puraans. For example, Ram Hanuman Yuddh is mentioned in Valmiki Ramayan and you will find a modified version in Vishnu Puraan also. This is because Puraanas are based on Shrutis and there are additions by many scholars over the centuries.
