Today’s song is a Parody song from the film Refugee aka Sharanarthi-1948. The film was produced by Harishchandra Rao Kadam for his own banner Harishchandra Pictures, Bombay.
This film was a “First time” for 3 persons.
First was the producer and lead actor of the film- Harishchandra Rao Kadam himself. He was basically a “C” grade action and stunt film producer. This was his first ‘Social film, which was also his last social film, as he then returned to his comfort zone of stunt films.
Second was the MD of the film Ajit Merchant. This was his first film as an Independent Music Director. So far he was an assistant to Ashok Ghosh and then Anil Biswas. The third was the singer Sulochana Kadam. She acted in this film for the first time. Later she did one more film.

Today’s song is from the revolutionary film- Duniya Na Mane-1937.
The Prabhat Film Company led by V. Shantaram could no longer sit back with their period films and decided to bring about social awareness through films. They took a gigantic leap with their historic production “Duniya Na Mane”. A great social classic, the first one on the empowerment of women, it denounced the dowry menace and the evil custom of old men virtually buying young brides. Eight decades have gone by and I am still waiting to see a film as revolutionary, daring, genuine and sincere in addressing a social issue related to the treatment of women in Indian society. Considered to be one of the best films made in India, it has left a permanent mark on the pages of film history and also on the minds of the audience of my generation. No wonder, highly acclaimed by the media it was then shown at the Venice International Film Festival.

The film was made by Bombay Talkies. It was directed by Franz Osten. The music was by Saraswati Devi and the Lyricist was J.S.Casshyap. The film was Debut film for the lead actor Kishore Sahu and actress Renuka Devi. The cast included Devika Rani, Kishore Sahu, Mumtaz Ali, Maya Devi, Chandraprabha (sister of Saraswati Devi), Renuka Devi, Prithviraj Kapoor and many others.
In the initial era of Talkie films, Calcutta’s New Theatres and Poona’s Prabhat were the most well known filmmakers. They used to make films on social issues. Particularly, Prabhat was famous for keeping their films centred on the Reform themes like,Dowry, Child Marriage, Second Marriage, Cast difference etc.From the mid 30s one more company came into limelight and that was Bombay Talkies- founded by Himanshu Rai and Devika Rani. They also followed the trend and films on social issues like Untouchability, illiteracy etc were made.
