Today’s song is from the film Ladli-1949. This was one of the popular films of MD Anil Biswas in those times. He was still in his prime, but on the downward curve past his prime. By mid 50’s, films came at a snail’s pace to him and then in a few years he left Mumbai, shifted to New Delhi and his life took a 90 degree turn, personally and professionally.

Today’s song is from the film Actor-1951.

Four songs of this film are already discussed here, however I liked this funny song, so I selected this song for today’s post. The film made under the banner of Sarosh Pictures, Bombay was produced by H.M.Kerawala and Bhojani. The film was directed by Ramjibhai Arya. He came to Talkie films from silent films. After working as an assistant to a few directors he first directed film Hind ke laal-40, then came Manthan-41, Jungle ki Pukar-46, Bhedi Dushman-46, Sher-E-Bengal-47 and his last film was Actor 51.

Today’s song is from the film Toote khilone-1954. The film was made by Pragati Pictures, Bombay. Produced by N.Mehta, it was directed by Nanabhai Bhatt. Though this was a social film, Nanabhai Bhatt was known for Mythological and stunt films. His real name was Yeshwant and pet name was Batuk. he directed his first Hindi film-Muqabala-42, using his name-Batuk Bhatt. Nana and Batuk indicate the small one or the younger one. Obviously Nanabhai was the youngest sibling. Incidentally, he was the father of Mahesh Bhatt and Mukesh Bhatt, from his second wife-Shirin bai, one time actress.

Today’s song is from the film Rai Saheb-1942.

How many of us really know anything about the title ” Rai Saheb” ? I am sure most people may not know.

When the British were ruling a larger part of the world, they had a system of honouring special people for their Loyalty towards the Raj, or for those who had done some great work, those who worked for removing the social ills etc etc. To do this, these people were given special Titles. The British Royalty used to bestow honourable titles for extraordinary work in its Empire, like OBE (Order of British Empire), CBE,CSI and similar titles. Usually such titles used to be given to Royal people of its Empire like Kings, Rajahs, Maharajas etc etc. It was a great honour.

Today’s song is from the film Rang mahal-1948. This social film was made by Eastern Pictures, Bombay. It was written and directed by Pt. Anand Kumar.

Not much is known about this director. He was one of those aspirants who ran away from home to Bombay- the Dream City, to make a career. In his first attempt he failed, went back to his village to do the ‘run away’ scene again second time, with more money. Even this time he failed, so he returned to his home and became a big and famous writer. He came back to Bombay only when he was invited by the film industry to make use of his skill !

Today’s song is from the film Pratigya-1943.

In HFGK the name of the film in Hindi is correct-” प्रतिज्ञा”, but in English it is written as ” Pratigya “. I do not understand why it could not be written correctly as ” प्रतिज्ञा “. Even film Sant Gyaneshwar-1940 had the same problem. In Hindi it is written correctly, but in English it is Gyaneshwar. Some English language scholars must solve this puzzle. My guess is, because in colloquial Hindi language ज्ञ is pronounced as ग्य . Like ग्यान for ज्ञान . HFGK must have opted for this spelling. It is funny – in Hindi it is written correctly, but in English, this way. If it was the other way round, I could have understood, since colloquial Hindi is Gya. I can’t somehow digest this awatar of English words !

Today’s song is from the film Milaap-1937.

Consequent to this film, two more films were made with the same title – Milaap-1955 and Milaap-1972. Milaap-55 was the Debut film for Music Director N.Datta. There were some very good songs by Geeta Dutt and an excellent song by my favourite singer-Hemant Kumar…Ye baharon ka samaa…. Unfortunately this song was summarily removed from the film for whatever reasons best known to the producers. The lead pair was Dev Anand and Geeta Bali. Film Milaap-1972 was one of those ” also ran’ films, starring Shatrughna Sinha and Reena Roy. Music Director Brij Bhushan gave mediocre music- no memorable songs. It is difficult to assess today’s film on these lines, because only one song is available and we do not know anything else about this film. Writing on old films is like walking in the dark with a stick. As long as the stick does not touch anything, you do not know that there is something in your way.
