Just listen to this Kishore Kumar song ! I have heard this song quite a few times, and all these days I thought that this song was written by Anand Bakshi and composed by R D Burman. But no, the lyricist is Kaifi Azmi and this song is composed by Madan Mohan.

Bollywood movie makers often tend to have same titles as that of old movies. For instance, I am aware of three movies titled “Adhikar”. The most well known of them for me is the movie of 1971 which was a musical blockbuster ( though the movie itself did not do well). There was another movie by this name in 1986.

Few people have heard the name of this movie and fewer people may have heard this song, but that was not the case all the time. During 1973, this song “tere sau deewaane” used to be quite a popular song.

“Joshila” (1973) is one of the lesser known movies starring Dev Anand with the then young heroines Hema Malini and Rakhi. The movie failed at the box office and few people recall what this movie was all about.

The movie “Faraar” is one of the lesser known movies of Amiatbh Bachchan. In fact, any movie just off the beaten track tended to end up becoming a lesser known movie, since the Bollywood spectators were just not mature enough to patronise movies that were even slightly different.

Have you ever felt like a student taking an examination who is unable to recall the correct answers during the examination, only to be able to recall them perfectly well after the exam is over ? well, I am feeling the same way vis a vis Holi songs.

I am surprised to see that as many as two memorable Holi songs are from 1980s. But when I look at the credentials of the lyricists and the music directors of these songs, I realise that they were very much throwbacks of the past, and so one should not necessarily be surprised that they came with such evergreen songs on the wrong side of the golden era of Bollywood music.
