Suchitra Sen – Passing of a Legend
————————————–

The one thing that always fascinates me about her, is her eyes. In all the Hindi films that I have seen, and a couple of her Bangla films, the memory that stays in the mind is that of a very beautiful face, adorned with the loveliest of eyes that I can remember. Large, round, full of expressions of life. It is as if the term doe-eyed was coined just for her.

Aah, the wonderful sound of sweetness. The delightful voice that has rendered one of the sweetest Marathi bhajans – “Keshava, Madhava, Tuzhya Naamat Re Godava” – O My Dear Lord Keshava, Your name is sweetness itself.

Greetings and best wishes to Suman Kalyanpur ji, on her birth anniversary (28th January).

Today (26 january 2014) is the 65th republic day of India. It is one of the most important and significant day in the history of Independent India, because it was on this day in 1950 that India became a democratic Republic unlike how it had been earlier. For the first time in the long history of India, all people were guaranteed equal rights and opportunities under the Indian constitution, something which was unimaginable till then.

The Voice of Mukesh #52
– – – – – – – – – – – – – –

Ah, the fiftieth song in this series. We are continuing to track the progress of Mukesh as a singer across the years of his career. And today we reach the 50th post in this journey starting from 1941.

And the number got me thinking – we need something special for the occasion.

Rare Performances – Things Unique and Unexpected #2

– – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – –

One aspect of the unexpected interludes on the Hindi film screen are the occasions when one gets to see songs performed on screen by the most unexpected actors. One does always expect the lead pair or pairs and occasionally the side heroes and side heroines to be performing songs of all types on screen. Of course the main comedy players are almost always expected to be performing songs of all types on screen. If you see the name Mehmood or Johnny Walker or IS Johar or even Jagdeep in the credits, one can be almost certain the film will have some song by them. This has been true for these actors, even during their senior years – one can see Johnny Walker in ‘Shaan’ (1980) joining the group song “Yamma Yammaa. . . Ye Khoobsurat Samaa”.

The Voice of Mukesh #50
– – – – – – – – – – – – –
Continuing with the exploration of Mukesh’s songs, we are now traversing the year 1950. Today I present a very soothing bhajan from the film ‘Ram Darshan’. A very softly and simply sung bhajan, that takes on a very emotional colour, being rendered in the soulful voice of Mukesh.

The Voice of Mukesh #49
– – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – –
‘Hanste Aansoo’ is a film from 1950 that has some wonderful songs by Mukesh. The film has a total of eleven songs, out of which five carry the voice of Mukesh. One song is solo, three are duets with different singers, and one is a group song which is rendered like a qawwaali. Of these, two songs viz., the Mukesh solo – “Qismat Mein Yehi Likha Thaa” and his duet with Rajkumari –“Maine Sapna Jo Dekha Hai Raat” are already posted here. I present today the third Mukesh song from this film, the qawwaali in which Mukesh is accompanied by the voices of Shamshad Begum and Mohammed Rafi.

The Voice of Mukesh #48
– – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – –
Gosh, it simply does not cease. I mean the surprise in coming across absolutely lovely gems, from films one would least expect to. Here is the next Mukesh song from 1950. The film is ‘Hamaari Beti’. Produced and directed by Shobhana Samarth under the banner of Shobhana Pictures, this film was intended to be the launch vehicle for her daughter, Nutan.
