Blog 10-Year Challenge (2010-2020) – Song No. 23
—————————————————————————
I could not send any write-up from my side on Sahir Ludhianvi’s birth anniversary this year on 08th March. However, I had shared few songs and had compiled an excel sheet on Sahir Ludhianvi’s filmography with the respective music directors, which I intend to use for future posts on the blog as and when possible.

While noting down the movies and number of songs from each movie, I came across the today’s songs or rather this ‘couplet recitation’ song from the movie ‘Dil Hi Toh Hai’ (1963). This song has been mentioned in the list of songs by Sahir Ludhianvi in Akshay Manwani’s book ‘Sahir Ludhianvi – The People’s Poet’. HFGK Vol IV (1961-1970) though does not mention this song in the list of songs under this movie. HFGK mentions ten songs in the movie which have already been posted on the blog.

When I searched for the audio/video of this extra song mentioned in Akshay Manwani’s book it was already available. So, we have an opportunity to bring this ‘couplet recitation’ on the blog today under ‘Blog ten-year challenge’ (since one song from this movie was posted on the blog on 23.04.2010). As this movie has already been ‘Yippeeee’ed’ on the blog the today’s song comes as ‘bonus’ for all of us to listen and enjoy.

Blog 10-Year Challenge (2010-2020) – Song No. 22
—————————————————————————

This day ten year ago (23 april 2010) was long long ago and it was an entirely different kind of world those days. Those were the days when people were supposed to go for work and that too on time. 🙂 You were questioned if you were late for work. 🙂

Now a days, we have to prove that we are going for work and why this work is important. Only people doing “important” work are supposed to go out of work these days. 🙂

I was supposed to be someone whose work was “important” then as well as now. That is a justification why I was postin only two or three posts those days as well as now a days. 🙂

Three songs were covered on the blog on 23.04.2010 :-

Song Movie title-Year Remarks
Bhoole se muhabbat kar baithaa Dil Hi To Hai-1963 All songs covered
Mukhdaa dekh le praani zaraa darpan mein Do Behnen-1959 04 of 07 songs posted
Bhalaa karne waale bhalaayi kiye jaa Ghar Sansaar-1958 All songs covered

As can be see from above, two out of three movies represented that day ten years ago have been YIPPEED. “Do Behnen” (1959) is the only movie that qualifies for “Blog Ten Year Challenge” today.

sone ko ham kalandar
aate hain bori bandar. . .

Yes, one of the very well known landmarks of Bombay (now Mumbai). And a very historic landmark at that. A lot has changed over the decades, but let us talk about the origins first.

As I searched for the meaning of the word Bori Bunder, I came across the following definition – a storage house for sacks; translating ‘bori’ as the sack made from jute thread, and ‘bunder’ identified as a variation of ‘bhandaar’ i.e. a storage house. This latter meaning is incorrect in my opinion. Some people who want to populate the Wikipedia and write with a modern mindset, probably are not aware that there are things called dictionaries for Hindi also. A quick check shows that ‘bunder’ (बंदर) is short form of ‘bundergaah’ (बन्दरगाह) which means a seaport, where ships come and stay for some time.

Another of those “aa ha” moments, as I was searching for a song to celebrate an anniversary. Sitting on my hard disk for a long time, I just pulled it up and listened to it, as I searched for a song by Khusheed Bano, And wow, what a wonderful creation this one turns out to be. And with a surprise bonus that saved me some extra effort.

Blog 10-Year Challenge (2010-2020) – Song No. 21
—————————————————————————

Today’s song is from the movie “Kavi-1954”. I have neither watched the movie nor I am aware of many of its songs. However, when I noticed this movie is due for ‘Blog ten-year challenge’ of 17.04.2020, I checked its pending songs. I came across a duet sung by Rafi Saab and Talat Mehmood which I found interesting since I was not aware of this song. Also, the music of this movie is composed by C. Ramchandra ji one of my favorite music directors which is another reason why I am sharing this song here today.

Three songs were represented on the blog on 17.04.2010 including a song from this movie ‘Kavi-1954’;

Song Movie title-Year Remarks
Bolo he zameen bolo aasmaan Chakradhaari-1954 All songs covered
Main pee ke nahin aaya Kavi-1954
Nuktaa cheen hai gham e dil Mirza Ghalib-1954 All songs covered

“Kavi-1954” had total ten songs in it, all written by Rajinder Krishan. Music for this movie was composed by C. Ramchandra.
Lata Mangeshkar, Mohd Rafi, Talat Mehmood, Asha Bhonsle and Chitalkar (C. Ramchandra) had given their voices to the songs in this movie.

Hindi Songs in Bangla Films – 24
———————————————–

‘Gali Theke Rajpath’ (Bangla film, 1959) was written and directed by Prafulla Chakraborty. The star cast included Uttam Kumar, Sabitri Chatterjee, Chhabi Biswas, Anup Kumar, Chhaya Devi, Tulsi Chakraborty, Bikash Roy, Shyam Laha, Sheela Paul, Helen, Jahar Roy etc. I have watched the video of a moderately edited film on one of the video sharing platforms. Probably, the film’s VHS tape was damaged as I found some  ‘jumps’ in the continuity of the film’s story. Unfortunately, English sub-titles are not available. A short synopsis on the cover of the VCD of the film helped me to understand the film’s story in a proper perspective.

Saga Of Sleepless Nights – 7
– – – – – – – – – – – – – – –

kal raat sapne mein aaye thhey tum
mere mehboob mere mehboob

Sound of a temple bell – that is how the renowned music director OP Nayyar once described the voice of Shamshad Begum. The clear sound of the tinkle, the chime and the ringing – the quality of sound that can maybe best described with the word ‘खनकती हुई’ – I could not locate a commensurate word in English. I am sure friends and readers who have heard her songs will easily relate with what I am getting at.

Remembering Shamshad Begum today on the 101st anniversary of her birth. She was born in 1919, this day, just one day after Baisakhi, and the horrific massacre at Jalianwaala Bagh in the nearby city of Amritsar. She was born into a traditional and conservative family of limited means. One of the eight children in the family, her father was a mechanic with limited income and a large family to feed.

Let me tell you a bit about the background of this post. My nephew works as an RJ for a radio station and he has a slot called ‘Golmaal Gagan ne bol diya to bol diya‘, which is an audio review of latest movies. The way things are these days I am sure he goes through a lot of pain watching substandard movies. He praised a recently released movie called ‘Jawaani Jaaneman’ (2020).  After listening to his review of this film I decided to watch it. Just as I was mulling over when to go to watch the movie, I got a message from our fellow Atulite Avinash. He wanted me to write up a bidaai song that was used in the film. Very kindly, he even sent me the lyrics of the song to help me.
