“Daastaan” (1950) was a Musical Pictures presentation. It was directed by A R Kardar. The movie had Suraiya, Raj Kapoor, Murad, Al Nasir, Veena, Suresh, Protima Devi, Shakila, Banerji, Lakshman, Surinder, Baby Anwari, Krishna Kumar etc in it.

Today (8 september) is an important date for music lovers of Hindi movie songs. It was on this date in 1933 that Asha Bhonsle was born. Today she turns 79. And she has been giving playback in HIndi movies since 1948. So she has been a playback singer for the last sixtyfour years ! Simply unbelievable.

Shehnaz(1948) is a lost film, it would seem. I havenot been able to find videos of any of the songs. I had sent the lyrics of four songs of this film. Atulji has posted three of them, and fourth one is this Rafi solo. I am reproducing the synopsis of the film and other details provided by Arunkumar Deshmukh Sir, our in-house encyclopedia about old Hindi film.

After the box office failure of “Mera Naam Joker”(1970), Raj Kapoor was a shaken and disillusioned man. When he decided to make a comeback, he decided to play safe and he made a teenage love story and not a serious philosophical movie. The old musical team that had served him well for the past two decades was summarily discarded and a new musical team was signed up for “Bobby”(1973).

Post “Anand”(1970) and “Mili” (1975),Hrishikesh Mukherji hit upon the formula of family comedy movies. In these movies, there would be an old fashioned strict patriarch/ matriarch who would regard himself as a know all and he would rule his joint family with an iron hand. The story of the movie would let movie goers have a laugh at the cost of that patriarch/ matriarch. This character was typically played by Om Prakash, Utpal Dutt, Dina Pathak etc.

“Shehnaayi” (1964) was a New Oriental Pictures production. It was directed by S D Narang. The movie had Biswajeet, Rajshree, Johnny Walker, Veena, Chaand Usmani, Nirupa Roy, Asit Sen, Iftekhar, Leela Chitnis, D. K. Sapru, Parveen Choudhary etc in it.
