Hullo Atuldom

‘Amrit’ released on 27th June 1986. It was written, produced and directed by Mohan Kumar (01/06/1934- 10/11/2017) whose wife happened to be the sister-in-law of J Om Prakash, and actor Deepak Parashar happens to be his sister’s son. Mohan Kumar made films under his banner EmKay Films Pvt. Ltd. and began as writer-producer-director with ‘Aas Ka Panchhi’ (1961) which was a Filmyug Presentation.

‘Amrit’ has Smita Patil and Rajesh Khanna play senior citizens whose children ill-treat them after their respective spouses’ death. Amrit played by Rajesh Khanna has a son whose wife makes her father-in-law a male-nanny cum servant in-charge of buying essentials etc. Amrit loves his grandson very much and he in turn is hand-in-glove with the grandpa in eating chocolates and ice creams on the sly. Similarly, Kamla Devi played by Smita Patil has a son, daughter-in-law, daughter-in-law’s brother and a granddaughter for family where she is reduced to being a maid and nanny. Both the seniors come in contact with each other because of the grand kids who happen to be classmates and playmates. The seniors develop a rapport and look after each other when they fall sick and they have a group of sympathizers in the local doodhwala, dhabawala, and a jobless lawyer and his wife (Satish Shah, Birbal, Shafi Inamdar and Aruna Irani). This is unacceptable to their children who take that as an excuse to show the door to their parents. The elders re-locate and Amrit finds a job as a school bus conductor and Kamla devi takes to training ladies in tailoring etc. The grand kids come looking for the grandparents after they grow up and get married. Simple tear-jerker family drama movie.

Today on the occasion of Kaka’s (a.k.a. Rajesh Khanna) death anniversary, let us have a song from ‘Amrit’ which was one of his successful movies in the period after his reign as superstar. We have him minus his characteristic mannerisms in this movie. This movie was Kaka’s next association with Mohan Kumar after the successful ‘Avtaar’.

This song is a Karva Chauth song and Smita Patil is seen breaking her fast with Shashi Puri (guest appearance) playing her husband. Then we see Kaka going into flashback about his wife and their way of celebrating the festival. Zarina Wahab in a guest appearance plays the role of the wife. The song is written by Anand Bakshi to Laxmi-Pyare’s music. Anuradha Paudwal and Manhar Udhas are the playback.

I have seen this movie a few times and I am always amazed at the exact same red colour that both the ladies wear in this song and their accessories. Kamla Devi (Smita Patil) taking pains with accessories is understandable as she is in a better financial position as compared to Savitri (Zarina Wahab) who is the wife of a signalman at Rajpur station. By the time the song ends Savitri also joins in (she seems to have learnt it too). Another thing is both couple sing the same song. Kya baat hai!!!.  How?

Incidentally, Zarina Wahab who made her debut in 1974 in the Dev Anand produced and directed ‘Ishk Ishk Ishk’ celebrated her 61st birthday on 17th July. Here is wishing her belatedly, all happiness and health.

Thinking of Kaka today, on his 8th death anniversary.

Rajesh Khanna – The Phenomenon – 6
– – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – –

Today 18th July is the Remembrance Day of Rajesh Khanna. He passed away on 18th July 2012. As a tribute to him here is song from the 1980 movie ‘Thodi Si Bewafaai’.

My last post in this series ‘Rajesh Khanna-The Phenomenon’ came almost one and half year back on his birth anniversary. In that post I had discussed a song from the 1979 movie ‘Amardeep’ and for today’s post we move to Rajesh Khanna movies in 1980.

The seventies ended on a positive note for Rajesh Khanna with ‘Amardeep’ being a hit at the box office. But, then 1980 was more like ‘turning around’ year for him on a positive note. And few of his movies performed well at the box office though only one of them viz. ‘Thodi Si Bewafaai’ became a ‘hit’ movie.

If we look back on the year 1980 from the point of view of Rajesh Khanna’s film career this was an important year for him – after his fourteen years in the film industry and recovering back after a string of commercially unsuccessful movies at the box-office.

However, these unsuccessful movies saw him playing different roles and it was like if he himself was trying to get out of his ‘Rajesh Khanna’ image and maybe it was a time for him where as an ‘actor’ he was doing an introspection of self.

As an actor he was looking for stronger roles. Nobody could have imagined that any star but Rajesh Khanna will be playing a role of a ‘psychopath who rapes and kills young women’ in those times in Hindi movies, but Kaka accepted this role in ‘Red Rose’. The movie was praised by all though it bombed at the box office. But it is considered a fine piece of the talent of the director Bharathiraja and Rajesh Khanna’s performance in it.

The other four movies of the same year 1980 viz ‘Phir Wohi Raat’, ‘Aanchal’, ‘Bandish’ and the today’s movie ‘Thodi Si Bewafaai’ also had him playing different roles a like a ‘psychiatrist’ in the ‘horror’ genre ‘Phir Wohi Raat’, a villager in ‘Aanchal’, a medical college student in ‘Bandish’ and a rich jeweler’s son in ‘Thodi Si Bewafaai’.

He appeared in the following movies in 1980;

S.No. Movie Year Passed by Censor Board Director
01 Thodi Si Bewafaai 1980 29.04.1980 Eesmaayil Shroff
02 Red Rose 1980 23.05.1980 Bharathiraja
03 Phir Wohi Raat 1980 06.08.1980 Danny Denzongpa
04 Aanchal 1980 18.09.1980 Anil Ganguly
05 Bandish 1980 07.10.1980 K. Bappaiah

‘Thodi Si Bewafaai-1980’ was directed by Esmayeel Shroff for Konark Kombine International. It was produced by Nand Mirani and Srichand Asrani, while Rashid Ismail was the co-producer of this movie. It was presented by Nand B. Mansharamaney. Subhash Sonik was the chief assistant director of this movie. Vasant Katkar was the art director of this movie. Editing of this movie was done by Rajoo. Esmayeel Shroff was the writer of this movie and its dialogues of this movie were written by Moin-ud-din. The movie was passed by Censor Board on 29.04.1980.

It had Rajesh Khanna, Shabana Azmi, Sushant Ray, Padmini Kolhapure, Deven Verma, Dr. Shreeram Lagoo, AK Hangal, Jalal Agha, Shashi Kiran, Raja Bakshi, Urmila Bhatt, Gayatri, Gouri Khorana, Preeti Ganguly, Deena Pathak, Leela Mishra, Madhu Chauhan, Lalita Kumari, Murad, Dharamveer, Moolchand, Ramavtar, Manmauji, Jameel, Kishore, Sunder Taneja, Gopal Sirkar, Mani and others. This movie introduced Dr. Maya Alagh.

This movie had total six songs written by Gulzar and composed by Khayyam Saab. Singers Lata Mangeshkar, Kishore Kumar, Asha Bhonsle, Sulakshana Pandit, Anwar, Jagjit Kaur and Bhupendra had given their voices to the songs in this movie. Today’s song is a background song (cum theme song too) sung by Bhupinder Singh.

This song is in three parts – first part happens as the movie starts with court proceedings where the court rules in favor of Neema (Shabana Azmi) and allows her to live separately from Arun Choudhary (Rajesh Khanna). The court also gives the custody of their child to Neema and allows Arun to meet the child for two hours once in a week on Sunday. As Neema, her child, her brother and Arun came out of the court, Arun once again tries to convince Neema to think about her decision but she is adamant and leaves with the child. Here the titles of the movie are rolling and the song continues.

Second part happens when Neema visits an optical shop for getting her spectacles repaired. The shop owner is Deven Verma and Arun (Rajesh Khanna) is working there. Here again very less dialogue is exchanged between them and Neema leaves the shop as Arun keeps watching her. The second part plays in the background here.

Third part of this song gets played when Arun visits Neema after a gap of twelve years to get his son back with him (as allowed by the court when the child completes fourteen years of age). However, he is told by Neema that Nandu (Sushant Ray) their son has gone to Bombay without telling her. Arun leaves in fury threatening Neema to meet once again in court. As he leaves Neema, who is shattered in grief, regrets to herself …

meraa to jeewan ujad gayaa …
main muqadamaa jeet kar haar gayi
tum muqadamaa haar kar jeet gaye
tumhaare liye Nandu sab kuchh hai, aur main kuchh bhi nahin,
ek baar mujhe bulaa kar to dekh liyaa hota, saaraa jeewan tumhaare pichhe pichhe chalti rehti …

Enjoy the words of Gulzar Saab, and Bhupinder Singh’s voice a perfect fit for such poignant philosophical songs and Khayyam Saab’s timeless music.

I have deliberately selected this background theme song for today where we can watch and enjoy the nuanced performances by both Rajesh Khanna and Shabana Azmi.

Enjoy the ‘times’ and ‘charisma’ of Superstar – Rajesh Khanna. . .

Today (2 july 2020) is the 66th birth anniversary of Sayeed Mohammed Aziz-un-Nabi, better known as singer Mohammed Aziz (2 July 1954 – 27 November 2018).

I was under the impression that he made his debut as a playback singer in 1970s. I was mistaking him with Anwar, who began his career in 1970s. Mohammad Aziz made his debut as a playback singer in HFM in 1984. He shot to fame with “Main mard taange waala”, the title song of “Mard”(1985). He then sung some other memorable songs. One of them being “Mai se meena se na saaqi se”.

On the occasion of his birth anniversary, here is a song from “Aakhir Kyon”(1985). This song is sung by Md Aziz. Indeewar is the lyricist. Music is composed by Rajesh Roshan.

The song gets played on a radio / two in one while Rajesh Khanna and Smita Patil, playing an estranged couple, look on.

The lyrics of the song are quite inspirational. The lyrics makes this song a forgotten gem.

jitney kaanten phool bhi utne
duniya ki ye ae ae bagiyaa aisi
jitney kaanten phool bhi utne
daaman mein khud aa jaayenge
jinki taraf tu haath pasaaare
ek andheraa laakh sitaare ae

beete huye kal ki khaatir tu
aanewaala kal mat khona
beete hue kal ki khaatir tu
aanewaala kal mat khona
jaane kaun kahaan se aakar
raahen teri phir se sanwaaare ae
ek andheraa laakh sitaare ae

dukh se agar pehchaan na ho to
kaisaa sukh aur kaisi khushiyaan
dukh se agar pehchaan na ho to
kaisaa sukh aur kaisi khushiyaan
toofaanon se lad kar hi to
lagte hain saahil kitne pyaaare ae
ek andheraa laakh sitaaare
ek niraasha laakh sahaaare
sabse badi saugaat hai jeewan
naadaan hain jo jeewan se haare ae
ek andheraa laakh sitaare ae ae ae

Blog 10-Year Challenge (2010-2020) – Song No. 13
——————————————————————————

In olden days (even today for that matter) Indians were expected to behave in a particular manner. For instance, when it came to their day to day live, most of them were “gareeb” and they were told that they had the sole right on the resources of the nation in the form of doles aka subsidies. All political parties claimed to be pro poor parties and promised to “hataao” gareebi if voted to power. After repeatedly getting voted to power on the plank of hataaoing gareebi, the same politicians now claim to be for the “gareeb”. These “gareeb” are supposed to be gullible possessing of short memory so the politicians can get away despite failing to fulfill their past promises.

Movie makers were no different. They too made movies for the same segment of society that were treated as “gareeb” by the political classes. This section of society was supposed to like movies with escapist stories that bore little resemblance to real life. Depicting real life was considered no no. Movies depicting real life were considered boring. Why would a “gareeb” audience come to the movie hall to watch movies depicting his real dull life ? This was what the movie makers believed in.

Sometimes, some movie makers would make movies with realistic movies. Ordinary movie goers and even press would describe these movies as boring. Most movies like this flopped.

Top stars acted in such movies for creative satisfaction, but the ordinary fans felt betrayed when they would go to the movie hall and find their star sans his usual mannerisms.

Rajesh Khanna is “Aavishkaar” (1973), and Amitabh Bachchan in “Man Aazaad Hoon” (1990) are two such movies that readily comes to my mind.

“Aavishkaar” (1973) was directed by Basu Bhattacharya Aarohi Film Makers Bombay. This movie had Rajesh Khanna, Sharmila Tagore, Dina Gandhi, Denis Clement, Satyen Kappu, Monika Jasnan (child artist), Devendra Khandelwal, Margaret, new discoveries Mahesh Sharma and Minna Johar etc in it.

The movie dealt with a real life “boring” tale, viz the marital life of a couple, played by Rajesh Khanna and Sharmila Tagore. Fans of superstar Rajesh Khanna, who went to the movie hass expecting a movie like “Aaraadhana”(1969) were disappointed. There was no way juvenile fans (including yours truly) of Rajesh Khanna, who were brought up on stuff like “Haathi Mere Saathi”(1971) and “Apna Desh” (1972) were going to like this movie.

This movie was only for “mature” movie goers. Just like “rich” people were looked down upon by “gareeb” people, “mature” people, with their occasional boring movies were looked down upon by people loving “mainstream” movies.

Please do not believe the review of “Aavishkaar”(1973) that is carried by wikipedia etc. These reviews are written with the benefit of hindsight by people who were not even born when this movie was released. I remember the reviews carried out in mainstream Hindi media during 1973 which bore no resemblance whatsoever with its review that we now find online.

Coming to the songs of the movie, “Aavishkaar” (1973) had five songs in it. Four of these songs are covered in the past as described hereunder:-

From the table above, we can see that one song from the movie was covered on this day, ten years ago. So, this movie provides us an opportunity to have a blog ten year challenge. At the same time, all the songs of the movie get covered as well.

Ten years ago on this day, two songs were covered in the blog

Today (7 january 2020) is the 63rd birthday of Reena Roy (DoB 7 january 1957). She made her debut in Hindi movies with B R Ishara who cast her in “Zaroorat”(1972) in a “bold” role. She was considered suitable for songs that are these days considered item songs. “Jaise Ko Taisa”(1973) may not be remembered today, but someone like me associate this movie with the song “able saawan mein jee dare rimjhim tan pe paani gire”. This song was picturised on Reena Roy and Jeetendra.

Reena Roy formed a hit pair with Shatrughan Sinha beginning with “Kallicharan”(1976) followed by “Vishwanath”(1978)- 16 movies in all. She also formed a hit pair with Sunil Dutt. She figured in “Naagin”(1976), “Jaani Dushman”(1979) etc with Sunil Dutt.

Reena Roy’s pairing with Jeetendra in typical Madrasi family dramas led to some memorable tear jerkers viz. Apnapan(1977), Badalte Rishtey(1978), Asha(1980), Pyaasa Saawan(1982), Arpan(1983) etc (22 movies in all). She won Filmfare award for best supporting actress for her role in “Apnapan”(1977).

Reena Roy also got to work with Rajesh Khanna, after he was no longer a superstar. They worked together in four movies. One such movie was “Dhanwan”(1983). Here Reena Roy plays the widow of Rakesh Roshan- another of her “strong” roles that she was known for in 1980s.

On this occasion, here is a song from “Dhanwaan”(1981). This song is sung by Lata. Sahir Ludhianvi is the lyricist. Music is composed by Hridaynath Mangeshkar.

The song is picturised as a stage dance song where Rajesh Khanna has bought the entire show and he is the only one in the hall watching the performance. The same situation would later arise with Jaya Prada and Amitabh Bachchan is another movie, viz “Sharaabi”(1984). 🙂

#the Decade of Seventies – 1971 – 1980 #
———————————————————–—-
#Bhoole-Bisre Geet # 88 #
—————————————

Welcome all to this post which comes after a long gap. I call it a ‘Long gap’ because this post was conceived by me ‘long back’ like many other posts of mine which remained unfinished aften getting started due to various reasons.

My last post on the blog was on 20th November. It was posted when I going through some health-related issues. I had to visit a Hospital in Nairobi, which is around 125 kms from my base station. Since some tests were to be conducted, I had to stay in Nairobi for four days. I stayed with colleagues working there in the Head Office. That didn’t allow me to concentrate on posts though I continued listening to music and watching songs. I even kept reminding our authors about movies that were falling under the ‘blog-ten-year challenge’.

The visit to the Hospital and Doctor made me recall many Hindi movies that had stories woven around ‘medical profession or serious medical complications’ (or diseases, if it is the right word?).

This time I had to specially visit ‘Dil Ka Doctor’. Its English translation ‘cardiologist’ has entirely different connotations from the Hindi word. This offers me material for a separate post provided I came across a suitable song to go with that proposed article.
.
T was another Doctor in India (in ‘Atulites WhatsApp’ group) who was already aware about my ‘dil ka haal’, and was already providing me guidance on the symptoms so that ‘I can bounce back’ without thinking that ‘beemaari ho to aisi ho jiska naam kisi Viceroy se kam naa lage’:)😊

The tests were conducted and results were awaited after two days (due to weekend holidays), I had realized that the problem was not serious and everything was going to be ok. The worries were mainly ‘Beemari ka shaq’like Doctor Kulkarni’s ‘Main usi shaq ka ilaaj karta hoon’, and hence the ‘tests’:)

Finally, the results were ‘declared’ and everything was well in order except a minor ‘Blood Pressure’ on the higher side. I thanked both the Doctors!!!

***

The movie of today’s song has a storyline around ‘Doctors’ or medical profession. But today’s post has nothng to do with that. This covers an an entirely different story behind it.

People of different generations have different taste for music and naturally everybody’s musical nostalgia keeps growing according to the surroundings they grow in and/or even the circumstances they live in (I think so).

Music lovers have their musical nostalgia, which depends on factors like the generation/ backgrounds/ circumstances in which they grow up. This musical nostaligia gets triggered up whenever they are reminded of those days.

Sometimes, people of different generations/ background/ circumstances pass on their brand of musical nostalgia to another (viz younger generation) music lovers. This results in the curious situation when music lovers in their teenns or twenties start loving vintage era music created during the times of his forefathers.

People coming in contact with me are slowly coming to know about my love for Hindi songs and Hindi movies. Some of them who become close friends have also come to know about our blog and my activities for the blog.

Assuming that you are considered a music lover, sometimes people approach you with their music related query. A query , that can stump even music “experts” is when we are asked to tell the details of a song whose details are known only partially or vaguely.

Most of the times I am able to provide the details or answer mkost of the time, but sometimes the challenge is quite tough.

For instance, take the example of a song which someone has heard but he remembers very few details of the song. And hewants you to find that song for him, without providing the usual details about mukhda of the song, or its tune, the artists, or the movie. Only thing he can tell is that this song is picturised on a ‘lady wearing white-blue saree and singing with some ladies sitting around a sea-beach or kisi nadi ke kinaare?

With such sketchy details, you are asked to find the song, because you claim to be a music expert songs and movies? You are also challenged and mocked that if you cannot find this song then
you should not talk about songs of movies 🙂 , chhod do gaane sun’na aur filmon ki baatein karna 😊 .

Anybody in my place would feel like my honour is at stake, and would definitely give this challenge a serious try, so I did …

It happened on one such week-end get together on Saturday evening here in the camp (where we are staying in Kenya). We regularly have such get togethers. If the get together is big and the occasion so demands, then listening to songs and even dancing becomes customary. This calls for a separate detailed post in future. 😊

It was in one such get together that our friend a QC guy, fifteen years younger to me challenged me when we were enjoying listening to songs. This guy wanted me to find a song for him. He must have watched this song on TV somewhere. What he remembered of it was that it is sung by a lady in ‘blue-white saree’ with ‘some ladies sitting around a ‘river bank’ or ‘sea-beach’ (he was not sure).

This guy who was born in early 1980s had one favourite Hindi song.

Guess which?

‘Do ghoont mujhe bhi pilaa de o saaki dekh phir hota hai kya’

He had listened to this song somewhere while he was with his friend on a long drive and since then this song was the most liked Hindi song for him. He is from Andhra so he is not aware of that much of Hindi songs, except few like the above. And, whenever there is a party, he would ask us to play this song so that he can enjoy it 🙂

We are aware that this song is from the movie ‘Jheel Ke Us Paar’ and the year of the movie is 1973 🙂 (and surprisingly this song has not been posted yet on the blog 🙂 )

Now given the challenge, I had to find him this song lip synced by a lady with a blue or white saree, so I was looking for hints. 🙂

The first song that readily came to my mind was the title song from ‘Jheel Ke Us Paar’ and the second thing I made up in my mind was that the song he was looking for must be a ‘haunting song’ or somewhat sad song like ‘naa koi umang hai’ so I started searching on YouTube by entering terms like ‘woman singing a song near sea-beach, river’, woman in white saree singing a song, heroine singing along river bank, sea-beach etc etc

I was sure that the song this guy was looking for must be a ‘haunting song’ (and not his fault though) because I know ‘gham ke chhod ke manaao rang raili’ was not in a white saree, then I thought white saree means should be a widow singing a song or like that.

After browsing couple of songs like ‘naina barse’ I turned to the songs of ‘Mera Saaya’ and ‘Anita’. Now, searching in YouTube has an advantage of suggestions appearing according to your search. (And over the years I have also learnt entering ‘out of the box’ search terms to find a song, it had successfully worked many times 🙂 )

And there with the songs of Anita in the suggestions I found this song …

Can you guess this song my friend was looking for was ‘sun ri pawan, pawan purvaiyya’…

My friend bowed to me, but I told him my friend it is not a white saree song but a blue saree with white border song !!

But I must admit that while my friend was correct in mentioning the scenario. It was I who interpreted it wrong and I was searching with wrong terms and still landed on the right song …

Also, he never mentioned that the song he was looking for is where the heroine is making a ‘baalu ka ghar’ (sand home 🙂 or is it a ‘mud-home’?) on the sea-beach.

Incidentally both the songs that my friend likes are the songs where the heroine is blind.

And our team member Pam Harvey has on his blog covered some blind women songs from Hindi movies in his article here.

And finally, the song we were looking for was a ‘happy song’ instead of a ghost song or haunting song which I presumed it should be.

For today’s post I am presenting a song which I think fits with the theme which I imagined was the theme for song my friend was looking for. 🙂

This song is from the 1980 movie ‘Bandish’, and it is performed on screen by Hema Malini where she is trying to ‘trap’ Rajesh Khanna by posing as a ‘bhatakti aatma’.

I remember to have watched this movie in our colony club during regular weekly screening may be in 1982-1983, I think.

‘Bandish-1980’ was directed by K. Bappaiah for ‘Suresh Productions, Madras’. It was produced by D. Rama Naidu. It had Rajesh Khanna, Hema Malini, Danny, Om Prakash, Asrani, Jeevan, Om Shivpuri, Madan Puri, Mohan Choti, Pinchoo Kapoor, Jagdish Raj, Maruti, Yousuff, Ranveer, Umesh Khanna, Prem Kumar, Dharmesh, Vijay Kumar, Shashiraj, Ganesh Nagpal, Raj Baldev Raj, Vijay Kumar, Kiron, Bedi, Pradeep Jain, Bindiya Goswami, Nalini Jaywant, Manorama, Preeti Ganguly and Tanuja, Padmini Kapila, Vakkalanka Padma, Ashoo, Munni.

Story of this movie was written by V.C. Kuganathan. K.A. Marthand was the Chief Editor of this movie. This movie was passed by Censor Board on 07.10.1980.

The movie had five songs composed by Laxmikant-Pyarelal. Lyrics of all the songs were written by Anand Bakshi.

So far only one song from this movie – ‘Rang bhare mausam se rang churaa ke’ has been posted on the blog and that was on 04.08.2011.

Asha Bhonsle, Kishore Kumar and Lata Mangeshkar had given their voices to the songs in this movie.

Incidentally there was only one Lata song – solo song – in this movie and this song is the one being presented here today.

(PS: recently there was a comment by Peevesie’s Mom ji regarding this ‘song searching or finding a song type issue which I am forgetting where it was, though I had noted the point earlier for this post 😊 )

Hullo Atuldom

The 80s was a period when there were a whole set of “Made in South” movies. Movies essentially remakes of popular and successful Telugu, Tamil and Kannada movies. Movies with nearly same formula- one hero and two heroines, both ladies loving the hero equally with the hero behaving courteously with one and loving the other passionately. To add further twist, the heroines will be sisters (as in Tohfa), childhood best friends (as in Raaste Pyar Ke), or meet accidentally and become good friends (as in Maang Bharo Sajna and Asha Jyoti).

All the movies would have good songs which used to be popular in the 80s and 90s but may have been forgotten since. The most important aspect of these movies used to be that one of the heroines would sacrifice her love or never reveal her love so that the other can lead a happy life with her partner/ husband etc. The hero in most of these South-made movies was Jeetendra and the heroines were mostly Rekha, Reena Roy, Shabana Azmi, Moushumi Chatterjee, Jaya Prada or Sridevi. Taking note of the success of Jeetendra in these movies Rajesh Khanna also acted in a few South-made movies.

Asha Jyoti was one of them. The movie had five songs with Anuradha Paudwal, Asha Bhonsle and Kishore Kumar as playback singers. Anjaan was the lyricist and Laxmi Pyare were the music directors. One song has been posted from the movie. In that post Atulji has speculated about the status of the relations between the main cast. I have seen this movie a long time back and here is the story of the movie, hope that it clears all speculations. 🙂

Asha Jyoti (1984) had Rajesh Khanna, Reena Roy and Rekha as the main cast. The film was directed by Dasari Narayana Rao, who had also directed Aaj Ka M.L.A. Ram Avtar with Khanna in the lead role and music was given by Laxmikant Pyarelal. The film is remake of Telugu Movie Srivari Muchatlu (1981).

Ramesh Chander (Om Shivpuri), a businessman, asks his son Deepak (Rajesh Khanna), a musician, if he would marry his childhood friend Asha (Rekha), but Deepak keeps declining this idea. Deepak falls in love with one of his fans named Jyoti (Reena Roy), a dancer, and he informs his parents by telegram that he has chosen a girl. Deepak promises to pay off the debts owed by Jyoti’s father. But when Deepak reaches his home in Bombay (now Mumbai), he finds that Ramesh has committed suicide due to bankruptcy. Ramesh expresses his last wish that his second wife and her daughter be taken care of. Deepak is delayed in Bombay and is unable to return to Kashmir.

In Kashmir, Jyoti’s creditor asks her father for money, but Jyoti expresses her inability to pay, so the creditor warns Jyoti’s father she will be in grave trouble. When Deepak does arrive at Jyoti’s house, her father lies, saying that he has married her off to the creditor. Deepak is heartbroken and returns home.

Seth Badri Prasad (Madan Puri), a rich man and childhood friend of Ramesh, bails Deepak out from bankruptcy and gets Ramesh’s creditors to not to file suit against Deepak and to auction the bungalow that he would buy. Deepak feels indebted to Prasad. Badri Prasad had been forcing his friend Ramesh Chander to ask Deepak to marry Asha, daughter of Badri Prasad. After Deepak returns to Bombay, his mother suggests to him that he should now get settled in his life and bring some happiness in his life and so he marries Asha. During the wedding, Deepak observes a woman similar to Jyoti. Deepak searches for the Jyoti lookalike and finds the woman was actually Jyoti.

Now Deepak knows that Jyoti was not married to Hukumchand (Roopesh Kumar) and that her father had lied to him. Jyoti had come to Bombay in search of Deepak and tells him that she is the mother of Deepak’s child. Deepak decides to end his marriage with Asha and to tell Asha the truth, but Jyoti insists that Asha would not be able to remarry as society might discard her. Jyoti asks Deepak to act as if they had never met and be a loyal husband of Asha, so that Jyoti can take care of Deepak’s child.

Later, Jyoti becomes a popular dance teacher in her city. Asha decides to learn dancing form Jyoti and they become close friends. Asha discloses that her husband is not loving her and he does not even come close to her. Jyoti visits Asha’s home and learns that Asha is none other than Deepak’s wife. Jyoti tells Deepak to be a true husband to Asha and give Asha the pleasures of married life.

Asha learns that Jyoti and Deepak were lovers before her marriage to Deepak and suspects they are having an affair. Asha found that Deepak and Jyoti are well-wishers of Asha, are innocent and victims of the unpredictable nature of fate. After coming to know the truth, Asha and Jyoti decide to sacrifice their respective lives to let the other live a nice happy married life with Deepak.

Sitting through the movie was not a pain. I loved the way the ladies (over) dressed in silk sarees and had extra long hair plaited in the traditional South Indian Style complete with a garden full of flowers on their hair and heavy jewellery. There was a time in my life when I yearned to have hair like my idol -Rekha- sported in these movies. These movies also showed that Rekha was an artist who followed all instructions of the choreographer and enacted the semi-classical dances that were there in the movie, as can be seen in the song of this movie that is already posted. She also had large eyes that conveyed a variety of emotions.

Today’s song comes towards the end of the movie where we have Asha dressing up Jyoti as a bride and trying to rectify the wrong that fate has delivered on Deepak and his Jyoti (the movies in this genre excelled in naming their characters). We also see that Deepak and Jyoti are not comfortable with this turn of events but Asha prevails on them and we have this Asha Bhonsle play backed song.

I am sure the readers have guessed why I chose a song that has the “oh! so beautiful!” Rekha for today’s post. Yes, she turns a year older today and it has become a compulsion for me that write atleast a small post to wish her.
Wish you a very happy birthday Rekhaji.

Song-Aayi pehli milan ki wo raat (Asha Jyoti)(1984) Singer-Asha Bhonsle, Lyrics-Anjaan, MD-Laxmikant Pyarelal

Lyrics

aayi pehli milan ki woh raat
sajan se na sharmaana
aayi pehli milan ki woh raat
sajan se na sharmaana
kya kya huyi re piya ke sang baat
kya kya huyi re piya ke sang baat
sawere humen batlaana
aayi pehli milan ki woh raat
sajan se na sharmaana

ho o o
kitne saawan pyaase tarse
tabhi suhaagan raat aati hai
aati hai toh
pyaar se mann ka kora aanchal bhar jaati hai
kora aanchal bhar jaati hai ae
pyaase mann pe huyi kya barsaat
sawere humen batlaana
aayi pehli milan ki woh raat
sajan se na sharmaana

tan se tan ka milan nahin yeh
tan se tan ka milan nahin yeh
yeh hai do saanson ka sangam
apne jiya ko bas mein rakhna
dil ki dhadkan jaaye na thham
kaisi hoti hai
kaisi hoti hai pehli mulaakaat
sawere humen batlaana
aayi pehli milan ki woh raat
sajan se na sharmaana

madhur milan ki iss bela mein
tan mann jeewan kar de arpan
madhur milan ki iss bela mein
tan mann jeewan kar de arpan
pyaar se saajan ka mann jeete
wahi dulhan hai yahaan suhaagan
o o o o
kiski jeet huyi re kiski maat
sawere hume batlaana
aayi pehli milan ki woh raat
sajan se na sharmaana
kya kya huyi re piya ke sang baat
kya kya huyi re piya ke sang baat
sawere humen batlaana
aayi pehli milan ki woh raat
sajan se na sharmaana
