Today’s song is from the film Badi Maa-1945.

The second world war had affected the British Raj very badly. There was Rationing of essential commodities and food items such as Rice and Sugar as well as other necessities like petrol, Kerosene etc. The film industry was hit greatly because the main ingredient of films- The Raw film- was put under Rationing. Small filmmakers were hit badly and the big ones got a limited quota based on their average production of the last 5 years. Like other items of rationing, even Raw film was available in Black market at an exorbitant price.

Today’s song is a Debut song for its singer- Music Director, S. Purushottam, who sang his only song in a Hindi film ever. The film was Apna Desh-1949.

Normally, the Indian film audience likes to see films which uphold the age old Indian values like, ” Truth prevails” or ” Good wins over evil ” or ” Real Love triumphs ” and such other things. Over a period, certain beliefs had been built over matters like entertainment. When only the stage dramas were available as the source of entertainment, people expected that a Joker (Vidushak) is a necessity in every drama. Even the oldest Sanskrit drama like ” Mrichhkatik” used to have a Vidushak (Joker) in it. In social dramas there always would be a funny character producing laugh and humour. Similarly, when Talkie films started, presence of songs was taken for granted and songs were very much a part of the film in any language, sometimes even as a background song.

Today’s song is from a ‘Milestone’ film Chandralekha-1948.

I call it a Milestone Film, because it was the pioneer film that started the south made dubbed, remade and independent Hindi films for the All India Hindi audience. What’s more, it happened at a time when the flow of such Hindi films made in the East- Calcutta- had diminished and after some time totally gave up the space to south made films.

Today’s song is from the film Mangala-1950. It was yet another remake of a Hit Tamil film, from Gemini Pictures, Madras. The fever of king size success provided by the giant success of film Chandralekha-1948 continued to give Vasan similar positive returns. After Chandralekha-1948, he had made one more remake- Nishan-1949 from his Hit Tamil film Apoorva Sagodharargal-1949, in Hindi, taking Bhanumathi and Ranjan as the lead pair.

Today’s song is from the film Shri Ram Avtar-1950.

Hindu religion has a very large literature. Unlike Islamic or Christian religions, Hindus do not have One Common Sacred ” GOD-BOOK”. That is because all the knowledge of Hindu religion can not be summed up in one book, however big it would be. Further Hindu religion is not rigid and gives freedom of worship to its followers as it suits them.

Today’s song is from the film Bhakta Dhruv-1947.

This was the first Talkie film on Bhakta Dhruv. The next came in 1957 and the third with the same title was in 1983. In between, another title called Bhakta Dhruv Kumar came in 1964. Going through the Film Title index, one finds that a total of 30 films with titles “Bhakta….” were made from 1934 to 1983. These were mostly different Bhakts like Kabir, Gopal Bhaiyya, Pooran, Soordas, Ramdas etc. Six films were made on Bhakta Prahlad.

Today’s song is from the film Taqdeer-1943.

I have been seeing films and listening to film songs from quite an early age. That is such an age that your experience is less and opinions are firm. From the beginning, I liked songs by Shamshad Begum and Kishore kumar. As far as Shamshad was concerned her peak period of songs was 1947 to 1955. Maybe I heard her best songs and that too composed by the top class composers like C.Ramchandra and Naushad. Kishore kumar, of course, was shining from 1952 to 1960. I believe firmly that his best songs were in this period. Many people may not agree to this, but then age makes a lot of difference in likes and dislikes.

Hullo Atuldom

1st August is the date when Meena Kumari was born as Mahjabeen Bano.

She had a career spanning 33 years, starting as a child artist in 1939. At a young age of 5 she became the bread-winner of her family. Fans of Meena Kumari know that she went on to adult roles from 1946 when she appeared in ‘Bachchon Ka Khel’ & ‘Duniya Ek Sarai’. ‘Baiju Bawra’ & ‘Parineeta’ helped her gain prominence as an actress. Till the late 1950s she had acted in films ranging from drama to comedy to fantasy before “Chiraag Kahaan Roshni Kahan”; “Main Chup Rahungi” & such other movies earned her ‘tragedy-queen’ sobriquet. Personally I liked her ‘chulbuli’ characters in “Miss Mary”, “Kohinoor”, “Azaad” etc.
