Greetings to all on the occasion of Basant Panchmi today.

Basant, the season of spring, is a season of new beginning, a season of rejuvenation and a season of arrival of happiness. It is the season of rebirth and bloom, the season of new love. In the Hindu tradition, Kaamdeva is the god of love and desire. As per the Rig Veda, the goddess Vasanta (Spring) is a companion of Kaamdeva. The weapon ascribed to Kaamdeva is a bow and arrow – the bow being made of sugarcane, stringed with honeybees, and the arrows are made of the fragrant flowers of spring. In the Hindu mythology, the season of spring is the season for love and amorous relationships. The first encounter of enchantment between Shakuntala and King Dushyanta is in Vasant ritu, the season of spring.

“Shahnaaz” (1948) is by now an obscure and forgotten movie. Little is known about this movie today.This movie was a Wahab Production movie and it was directed by S Hassan. The star cast of the movie included names like Nihar, Begum Para, Sheikh, Shanta Patel, Shyama, Gulzar, Altaf etc.

“Shahnaaz” (1948) is an obscure movie and little is known about this movie. In fact, there is uncertainty even about the title. I have seen the title being spelled as “Shahnawaaz” too in some site.

“Anokhi Ada” (1948) was a Mehboob Production movie. It was directed by Mehboob himself and the star cast of the movie included names like Prem Adeeb, Surendra, Naseem Bano, Pratima Devi, Zeb Qureshi, Cuckoo, Bhudo Advani, Nawab, Murad,etc.

“Barsaat” (1949) was arguably a pathbreaking movie and the music of this movie heralded the arrival of Shankar Jaikishan as the most dominant music composers of Hindi movie for the next two decades. This dominance was finally broken in late 1960s with the arrival of R D Burman.
