The Voice of Mukesh #68
– – – – – – – – – – – – – –
The phase of Mukesh’s career in the years from 1954 to 1957 makes a very ineffectual reading. In these four years, the number of songs sung by him in each year did not even touch the double digit numbers. After recording 10 film songs in 1953, the numbers for subsequent years are – 6 for 1954, 9 for 1955, 7 for 1956 and 5 for 1957. It was only in 1958 that these numbers pulled themselves back into double digits – he recorded 13 songs in 1958. But all said and done, the equations had changed, by the time 1950s came to a close.

BOMBAY has always been an attraction for outsiders. It is a Dream-City for most people coming from other states. Not every one’s dreams are realised, but it does provide opportunities. Then it is your luck and efforts, which will either make you or break you. This is not only about Film line but people from all walks of like look at Bombay this way.It started from the 17th Century when Bombay was just a cluster of undeveloped islands. In the 18th and 19th century Bombay developed into a Metropolitan city, having a majority of people from outside. Bombay Gazette of 1885 says that , out of a total population of 10 lakhs, almost 9 lakhs were outsiders, i.e, Non-Natives. A Minority of Britishers ruled the majority for a long time.

The Voice of Mukesh #67
– – – – – – – – – – – – – –
The journey following the songs of Mukesh now enters 1955. As we come into the time period of mid fifties and later, we are going to find more and more songs being already posted. The songs that are remaining now are the ones which mostly are obscure, and less heard earlier. But there is fun in filling the gaps.
