“Jaani Dushman”(1979) was produced and directed by Rajkumar Kohli. The movie had received enormous publicity before its release. It was a multistarrer movie, though the stars who mattered to be those days, viz. Amitabh Bachchan, Vinod Khanna and Dharmendra did not figure in the movie. The movie had Sunil Dutt, Reena Roy, Jeetendra, Premnath, Shatrughan Sinha, Sanjeev Kumar, Rekha, Amrish Puri, Neetu Singh, Vinod Mehra, Bindiya Goswami, Sarika, Yogita Bali, Vikram, Aruna Irani, Raza Murad, Madan Puri, Sulochana, Shakti Kapoor, Paintal, Jagdeep, Roopesh Kumar, Shobhni Singh, JaiShree T, Indrani Mukherjee, Neeta Metha, Anwar Hussan, Sheetal, Aarti, Maruti, Mac Mohan, Rakesh Roshan, Neeta Mehta etc in it.

“Roop Tera Mastaana”(1972) was directed by Khalid Akhtar for Suchitra Kala Mandir, Bombay. This movie, whose title was clearly inspired from the superhit song of “Aradhana”(1972) had Jeetendra, Mumtaz, I S Johar, Pran, V Gopal, Malika, Leela Mishra, Brahm Bhardwaj, Jankidas, Birbal, Machchar, Mirza Musharraf, Munshi Munaqqa, Lotan, Rajan Kapoor etc in it.

“Naagin”(1976) was released with some great pre release publicity. It was described as a big multistarrer movie, if I recall correctly. Personally I was rather underwhelmed by such publicity. The movie had Sunil Dutt, Feroz Khan, Vinod Mehra, Kabir Bedi, Anil Dhawan, Sanjay Khan, Rekha, Reena Roy, Yogita Bali, Prema Narayan, Neelam Mehra, Heena Kausar, Aruna Irani,Jeetendra, Mumtaz, Premnath, Ranjeet, Roopesh Kumar, Komilla Wirk, Jagdeep, Gulshan Arora, Sulochana, Aarti, Anita Guha, Maruti, Tuntun, Satish Arora, Rajan Sethi, Master Bittu etc in it. To my mind, no movie of those days could be described as a multistatter if it did not have at least two actors out of Amitabh Bachchan, Vinod Khanna and Dharmendra, and none of them were there in this movie.

Begum Akhtar recorded this ghazal written by Kaifi Azmi (at the age of 11) for Doordarshan just a few days before she left for heavenly abode on October 30, 1974. And this turned out to be her last recording for Doordarshan.

I have been longing to share some posts which have been delayed much due to one reason or the other. This song post is one of them. And I can number it as a ‘vacation nostalgia-post-1’, because I have to share one more in this series.

Hullo to all in Atuldom
Recently I made a few discoveries. That without effort some of the artists reach centuries on our blog and we work towards finding unspotted songs of others and these artists are plodding their way towards reaching even their first 1000. For example Indeevar has only 192 out of a total 1875 song penned by him. Similarly Madan Mohan has 471 songs from his 630 among the music directors. Kishore Kumar has only 926 out his 2709 songs here on the blog. And hold your breath there are a whopping 2900 Lata songs (at her last century) and 2466 Rafi songs on the blog. So do we say (in Gabbar style) “bahut be insafi hai yeh” or do we say that we have been partial to these two or is it a case of chalte chalte they just reached these numbers without anyone’s knowledge. Whatever be the case in my own small way let me contribute to rectifying the situation.

Today’s song is a Manna Dey NFS.
We have just completed 2 years without the Ace Singer, Manna Dey. He left us on 24-10-2013. He was probably the last of the Golden Age male singers, who started singing in the 40s. I called him an Ace singer and most readers would agree with it too, but Manna Dey never got rated as the No 1, or 2 or 3 or even 4th singer. Every A grade composer agreed that he was a great singer, but no one would call him to sing a song, on a regular basis. Though Manna Dey sang for almost every composer of his times, he was neither a favourite of any Music Director, nor did any top actor insist for him as a playback singer of his choice. So, strangely, while recognition was there, results were not matching !
