Libaas (1988) didn’t get an official release though it was shown at some international film festivals. When asked about the film’s fate some ten years back, Gulzar played the ball into the producer’s court and feigned disinterest. Most probably it will never get released. All that we are left with, are the songs and some dialogues from the movie.

This is the only song of Ijaazat (1987) missing on this blog. For me the songs of Ijaazat have a special place in my heart. I still remember the audio cassette, which I bought. It was a rainy August afternoon. I knew exactly what I wanted to buy from my first earnings through giving tuitions. I came back from the college and I think I must have listened to that cassette on that day nearly hundred times. But that is just half the reason for its special status. In the 80s the music in Hindi films was IMHO losing quality. The arrival of Ijaazat came as a whiff of fresh air. More than that, it reinstated my faith in Pancham once again.

The film Angoor (1982) has only three songs and thus this is the last song to appear from this film. This song has not only similar opening lines like C. H. Atma’s preetam aan milo (also sung by Geeta Dutt in Mr. & Mrs. 55 , but also shares its tune. Dismissing this version as a parody, however, would be underrating it.

As I have written in my last post, this film Angoor (1982) is based on William Shakespeare’s Comedy Of Errors. Sanjeev Kumar and Deven Verma play the two pairs of twins who get separated in childhood. Both the characters played by Sanjeev Kumar and Deven Verma are named Ashok and Bahadur respectively, where the Bahadurs are servants of the Ashoks. One Ashok with one Bahadur live in one town, while the other pair lives in some other. A big confusion arises, when one pair comes to the town where the other pair lives. To add to the confusion, one pair is married, to Moushumi Chatterjee and Aruna Irani respectively, while the other is still unmarried. Deepti Naval plays the sister-in-law of the married Ashok. Now, if you are pulling your hair out of confusion, I won’t blame you! But that is the stuff, of which Comedy Of Errors is made of!

This is the first song from the film Angoor (1982) to appear on this blog. Although this film enjoys quite a popularity, the songs hardly became popular among the masses. The musical score has remained an insider’s tip for Pancham and Gulzar fans.

“Teri Baahon Mein” (1984) was a Kalptaru Films production. It was produced by Pramod Poddar and directed by Umesh Mehra. The movie had Mohanish Behl, Ayesha Shroff, Parikshit Sahni, Dev Kumar, Prem Chopra, Navin Nischol, Kalpana Iyer, Mac Mohan, with Parveen Babi and Mithun Chakraborty in special appearances. I recall that this movie was touted to be inspired from “The Blue Lagoon”. When most small time Hindi movie makers wanted to get “inspired” from western movies then they reminded me of the Hindi saying-“Kahaan Raja Bhoj Kahaan Gangu Teli”.

I first heard this private song of Jagjit Singh and Chitra Singh, in the film ‘Hero’ (1983). In a scene in the film Meenakshi Sheshadri is seen moping around and listening to this song on a cassette player. Just a few lines are heard before the scene continues on, but later on we got to hear the whole song in a cassette of this duo’s ghazals. I do not remember the name of the collection. It may have been ‘classic collection’ .
