“Saawan Ko Aane Do” (1979) was a Rajshree Productions movie and like most Rajshree Productions movie, music was the hero of this movie too. The movie was full of nice songs which became quite popular. In fact most people may have watched the movie for its songs. I was certainly one of them.

“Aalap” (1977) was a movie that turned out to be a commercial disaster. Now, with the benefit of hindsight, it is easy for me to say that movies should not be judged on the basis of their box office performance, but unfortunately that is the single most important yardstick to judge the success of a movie. After the failure of this movie, Amitabh Bachchan resolved not to work in an offbeat movie like this. May 5th 1978 was a most awaited day for an Amitabh Bachchan fan. That day his latest movie Trishul got released. Zanjeer, Deewar, Sholay, Adalat and Khoon Pasina had been released in the preceding years and had proved to be super-duper hits. Amitabh Bachchan’s distinctive “positioning” as the “angry young man” in the rather cluttered world of Bollywood heroes was firmly established. That the above-mentioned movies were interspersed with blockbusters like Kabhi Kabhie (romantic hero) and Amar Akbar Anthony (comedian) only helped to intensify the hero’s aura among his fans.

“Toote Khilaune” (1978) was a flop movie and rightly so. Who in his right minds would like to go and buy tickets to watch nobodies like Shekhar Kapoor and Shabana Azmi in lead roles ? Neither I nor anybody else, of course.
