“Aalap” (1977) was a movie that turned out to be a commercial disaster. Now, with the benefit of hindsight, it is easy for me to say that movies should not be judged on the basis of their box office performance, but unfortunately that is the single most important yardstick to judge the success of a movie. After the failure of this movie, Amitabh Bachchan resolved not to work in an offbeat movie like this. After a few years, he worked in another such off beat movie called “Main Aazaad Hoon” with similar disastrous results at the box office.

In Hindi movies, actors are often seen singing in front of a gathering while seated on a grand piano. This to my mind was rather unrealistic. For one, there may not have been too many households owning spacious houses with huge hall where such grand pianos were kept. Secondly, it is humanly not possible to play the piano and sing a song simultaneously.

May 5th 1978 was a most awaited day for an Amitabh Bachchan fan. That day his latest movie Trishul got released. Zanjeer, Deewar, Sholay, Adalat and Khoon Pasina had been released in the preceding years and had proved to be super-duper hits. Amitabh Bachchan’s distinctive “positioning” as the “angry young man” in the rather cluttered world of Bollywood heroes was firmly established. That the above-mentioned movies were interspersed with blockbusters like Kabhi Kabhie (romantic hero) and Amar Akbar Anthony (comedian) only helped to intensify the hero’s aura among his fans.
