Blog 10-Year Challenge (2009-19) – Song No. 16
————————————————

15 songs have been covered so far in the ‘ten-year challenge’ on the blog so far and this will be the 16th post in the series.

As we proceed in this journey, it is getting more and more interesting at least as far as I am concerned. I was not associated with the blog ten years ago, so my browsing through the blog for posts of those days give me an interesting singh on the way posts were appearing on the blog ten year ago. My first comment on the blog would appear on the blog on 15.09.2009.

Blog 10-Year Challenge (2009-19) – Song No. 15
————————————————

12th March, ten years ago. Six songs posted, and six films represented that day.  The films are ‘President’ (1937), ‘Paarasmani’ (1963), ‘Mera Gaaon Mera Desh’ (1971), ‘Elaan’ (1971), ‘Anjaana’ (1969), and ‘Mehboob Ki Mehndi’ (1971). On that day, the 1971 film ‘Elaan’ made its debut on our blog with the song “Aap Ki Rai Mere Baare Mein”.

Of the six films appearing that day, four have already been yippeee’d.  Given the set of popular and familiar songs, the films ‘Paarasmani’, ‘Mera Gaon Mera Desh’, ‘Mehboob Ki Mehndi’ and ‘Anjaana’ have all their songs posted. ‘President’ – the 1937 film featuring KL Saigal and Kanan Devi, still has some songs pending. However today, I pick up the other pending film from that date – ‘Elaan’ of 1971.

“Aanchal Ke Phool”(1968) is released 50 years ago and that makes it a recent movie by the standards of this blog. 🙂 Nevertheless, little is known about this movie because it was a B grade movie and it failed to do well at the box office.

Blog 10-Year Challenge (2009-19) – Song No. 14
————————————————

‘Bobby’ created almost a storm in 1973. This drama of puppy love, completely fresh faces (almost, Rishi Kapoor had already made his mark in the ‘child RK’ role in ‘Mera Naam Joker’ (1970)), and a love story aimed at an age bracket lower than college going young people – the lovers in this film are just transitioning from high school to college. In the early 1970s, the influence of the hippie movement and free love ideas from the west into the Indian society was still a compelling influence. And the provocative presentation, as is the wont of RK style, ensured that young people of all ages went to see this film multiple times in the theaters.

Today’s song is from film Gauri-1943. It was a film made by Ranjit Movietone. The Lyrics, Story and Screenplay as well as the Direction was by Kidar Sharma. The cast of the film was Prithviraj Kapoor, Shamim, Monica Desai, Rajkumari Shukla, Brijmala, Amarnath etc etc.

The making of film Gauri-1943 had a big story behind it. This is described in great details by Kidar Sharma himself, in his autobiography ” The one and Lonely Kidar Sharma”. We will, however, discuss this in an abridged version here.

Blog 10-Year Challenge (2009-19) – Song No. 13
————————————————

When the blog’s train reached 9th March of 2009, ten years ago, one of the songs posted that day was from the 1980 film ‘Thodi Si Bewafaai’.  Till that point, it was the third song posted for this film. Today, after a gap of 10 years, the fourth song of this film finds its place here.  Wow, ten years it took – and none of us thought of looking at this film again during these years.

This song I am posting is from the 2010 movie ‘Aisha’ starring Sonam Kapoor & Abhay Deol.  There are other actors but the movie focuses on these two central characters.  It is about characters who do sometimes act out of character.   Aisha is a social butterfly, who dabbles into all i.e. baking, yoga, gardening, drawing, shopping, event management and match making.  In between all this she also finds time to jog in the morning and spends time at animal shelter.  Watching polo match is a foregone conclusion considering her upper class background.  Her charmed circle goes for picnics, stays in tents next to the river and goes river rafting to end the evening singing by the bonfire. She even goes pubbing and parties at farm houses in true Delhi style, in between bitching about a New York returned female colleague of Abhay Deol, who is a corporate slave according to Aisha.  Who wouldn’t want to do all of the above, if one was so inclined within one hour 🙂 .
