When I was growing up as a pre teen kid in late 1960s and early 1970s, I heard many songs that left indelible imprints on my psyche. There are a few such songs which I never heard again for several decades. Thanks to this blog, which makes me look for songs and which familiarises me with songs sent as farmaishes by my readers, I have been rediscovering many of these forgotten gems.

Madan Mohan is often associated with serious ghazal songs sung by Lata. But Madan Mohan has composed all kinds of songs including light hearted and non serious songs sung by several singers. In fact, the Madan Mohan song that climbed the highest in Binaca Geetmala annual charts in his lifetime was not a ghazal by Lata but a mela song by Asha Bhonsle. It was the hugely popular Jhumka gira re Bareli ke bazaar me from “Mera Saayaa” (1966).

When it comes to a movie called “Albelaa”, there have been two movies of this name. “Albelaa” (1952) , which had Bhagwan and Geeta Bali in lead roles was a mega hit. The songs of “Hare Rama Hare Krishna” (1971) were big rage during their time. One song that was a huge hit with kids like me was this song “Kaanchaa re Kaanchaa re”. Overnight, people with Nepali features began to be called Kaanchaa (males) and Kaanchi (females) respectively. One of my acquaintence kid sang this song “Kaanchi re Kaanchi re” addressed to a Nepali girl, hoping to eve tease her, but the girl, instead of feeling offended, sang back “Kaanchaa re Kaanchaa re” to him. 😉
