The small girl in the song with this post celebrates her 52nd birthday today—unbelievable she is so young. The birthday list on our blog says she is 1965 born, also the Filmfare awards list page says she was all of 15 when in 1980 she won the Best Supporting Actress award for her depiction of a rape victim (in ‘Insaaf Ka Taraazu’). She seems to have been around forever. I just do not want to use the phrase ‘past her prime.’ Come to think of it she is younger to the Khans who are ruling the industry these days.

Under this series today we have this beautiful ‘Sufi Qawwali’ composed by C.Arjun and which is written by none other than Sahir Ludhianvi for the movie ‘Nawaab Sahib-1978’. I have vague memories of watching this movie in late seventies or early eighties, but I do not remember much about this movie or its story line. The only memory of this movie that I had carried over in my growing years and thereafter was this song ‘Hum Mein Hai Kya Ke Hamen Koi Haseena Chaahe’ sung by Mohd Rafi.

Here is a song from Muqaddar Ka Sikandar. It is written by Anjaan and Kalyanji Anandji are the music directors. It is sung by Asha Bhonsle, Mahendra Kapoor and Lata Mangeshkar.

This movie had great songs. All Eight of them. But a lousy story line (I can see a whole lot of Atulites chuckling right Rajaji?)

Yesterday (27 april 2017), sometime around noon, I got to hear the very sad news that Vinod Khanna had passed away.
I had logged onto Twitter for a bit – and immediately saw a tweet saying “One of the most handsome actors of Hindi movies. RIP”. My heart sank. Soon it was clear that the person being discussed, and now trending as a hashtag, was our own beloved Vinod Khanna.

Recently a picture of Vinod Khanna had been circulating on social media. It shocked many (including myself) as it showed him in a very frail condition. I, for one, was not even aware that he was ailing. But nowadays, with advances in medical science, you tend to expect recovery, especially for someone barely 70.

It was not to be.

The end was therefore unexpected for me – and I think, for many.

Rajesh Khanna – The Phenomenon – 4
– – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – –

This post under this series is not in chronological order as far as my ongoing reminiscences about Rajesh Khanna movies are concerned. But this post fits in this series about Rajesh Khanna. This particular movie “Chakravyooh”(1978) was critically acclaimed for the performance of Rajesh Khanna as also for ‘its offbeat story line’ which was at variance with typical Rajesh Khanna-romantic movies that we were used to.

Subhash Ghai first directed “Kallicharan”(1976). People like me thought that his title was inspired from a leading West Indian batsman of those days namely alvin Kalicharan. Our doubt was confirmed when he named his next movie as “Vishwanath”(1978). 🙂 Vishwanath was a leading Indian batsman of those days. Gavaskar and Vishwanath used to be the two most reliable Indian batsmen of those days. Gavaskar would score runs on placid tracks whereas Vishwanath would score runs on pitches assisting bowlers. India never lost a test match when Vishwanath scored a test century. Vishwanath married Gavaskar’s sister and that way the two of them are jeeja and saala.

“Ankhiyon Ke Jharokhon Se”(1978) was inspired from Eric Segal’s immortal novel “Love Story”.

Majority of movie watchers including me, who watched “Ankhiyon Ke Jharokhon Se”(1978) did not know about the source of inspiration of the movie. The movie was a bo office hit. People wathing the movie liked it for its story and for its music. My own feeling is that the music of this movie may have played the bigger role in ensuring that the movie was a money spinner for Rajshree Productions, the makers of this movie.
