Suraiyya, who made her debut in Hindi movies as a child artist in 1942, began to get the roles of heroines from 1946 onwards. In “Parwaanaa” (1947), she got to act opposite K L Saigal, then the reigning superstar of the time.

Suraiyya sang her first playback song for another actress at the age of 13. That was for Mehtab who was then 17 years of age. Mehtab (who incidentally was K Asif’s wife), on finding that her playback was being given by a 13 year old kid, got mad at her producers.

“Station Master” (1942) is a movie that had Prem Adeeb and Ratnamala in lead roles. It was in this movie that Suraiyya, then 13 years of age, made her Hindi movie debut under the name of Baby Suraiyya. It was in this movie that she got to sung her first song, which was picturised on herself.

Mukesh was brought to Bombay (now Mumbai) in late 1930s by Motilal (a distant relative) who had seen him singing a song at Motilal’s sister’s wedding. While at Bombay, Mukesh got the opportunity to act and sing in a movie called “Nirdosh” (1941). This movie also had Nalini Jaiwant.It is interesting to note that Mukesh first acted in movies in 1940s, whereas his grandson (Neil Nitin Mukesh) is acting in movies more than six decades later.
