It is interesting to know how the information that is common knowledge four decades back becomes rare information with passage of time. Today few people know about the existence of this movie and its songs. When I was growing up as a pre teen kid in late 1960s and early 1970s, information about this movie was readily available but I never bothered to look that up. after all I was a pre teen kid, who was only interested in the new songs and new movies, not old ones like this.

He is a song that I heard for the first time only recently. This song is from a movie called “Paisa Hi Paisa” (1956) and this movie too is unfamiliar to me.

Here is a very old song from an old and forgotten movie called “Nazma” (1943). This song is sung by two female singers. This song could be called a song of contrasting moods or a happy-sad song, where Sitara Devi exudes happiness and joy whereas Parul Ghosh sings with sadness and pathos.

From the song, it is often possible to guess the music director. But not always. there have been cases where a song, sounding like O P Nayyar’s song may turn out to be Madan Mohan’s.

“Mumtaz Mahal” (1944) is a by now forgotten movie. This movie has Khursheed in the title role with Chandramohan,Kajjan, Sulochana Chaterjee, Lala Yakub, Brajmala etc also figuring in this movie.

Very little is known Hindi movie songs from the earlier days, viz 1930s and 1940s. Those were the days when actors themselves sang for themselves. Sound reecording technology was in its infancy and producing decent quality records was a technological challenge. The fact that films and records quickly degraded meant that preservation of these items was a Herculean task as well.
