When I was growing up as a kid in late 1960s and early 1970s, I noticed that old movie makers tended to give their movies the same title as the titles of new movies. 🙂 When radio announcer announced songs from “Andaaz”, “Aankhen”,”Aarzoo”,”Adaalat”, “Parwarish” etc, I expected to listen to songs from the newer movies of 1960s and 1970s and I was very upset when the songs played were from old movies of 1940s and 1950s, which were boring by my definition.

A couple of days back I got to see the movie Naughty Boy (1962). It is a comedy starring Kishore Kumar and Kalpana (often remembered as the heroine singing “main chali main chali” with Shammi Kapoor in Professor, or the object of Dev Anand’s “arrey yaar meri tum bhi ho ghazab” in Teen Deviyan).

Movies of 1930s and 1940s are obviously movies far too old for anyone of us. Hardly any information is available about movies and actors of that era. The generation who followed these movies are also no longer there with us. So, with passage of time, the music of that era is getting forgotten.

A few hours ago, I came across a lovely song from a very old movie. Here is this song, which is sung by Kanan Devi, and I guess that this song is picturised on her as well. Aarzoo Lucknowi is the lyricist and music is composed by R C Boral.

“Shair” (1949) is a movie starring Suraiyya and Dev Anand. The movie did well at the box office. This movie was a musical blockbuster. I have discussed as many as six songs from this movie in these pages in the past.

Suraiyya, who made her debut in Hindi movies as a child artist in 1942, began to get the roles of heroines from 1946 onwards. In “Parwaanaa” (1947), she got to act opposite K L Saigal, then the reigning superstar of the time.

Suraiyya sang her first playback song for another actress at the age of 13. That was for Mehtab who was then 17 years of age. Mehtab (who incidentally was K Asif’s wife), on finding that her playback was being given by a 13 year old kid, got mad at her producers.

“Station Master” (1942) is a movie that had Prem Adeeb and Ratnamala in lead roles. It was in this movie that Suraiyya, then 13 years of age, made her Hindi movie debut under the name of Baby Suraiyya. It was in this movie that she got to sung her first song, which was picturised on herself.
