Here is a song which must be perhaps the oldest piano song in Hindi movies. This song sees K L Saigal meeting a man (Can anyone tell who he is) and Kanan Devi. He decides that Kanan Devi is going to sing a poem of K L Saigal. Kanan Devi sits on the grand piano and sings this song.

When I look at the roles of lead actresses of Hindi movies, I find that the ability to cry is an essential quality that they must possess. So I cannot help but feel that most actresses who entertained hopes of a successful careers in Hindi movies needed to have lots of practice of crying. In other words, it always helped if they came from families that offered them lots of opportunities to hone this skill. So does it mean that most actresses in Bollywood had unhappy childhood ? Shudder !

When I was a young kid, I did not like old songs, especially those sung by K L Saigal. With time,as I became more mature (?), I began to tolerate, and subsequently began to appreciate K L Saigal.

When I was a kid, I disliked listening to old songs, especially the songs in Radio Ceylon’s “Puraani filmon ke geet” which was broadcast from 7-30 AM to 8-AM. I in fact found the singing style of these old songs quite funny. And I would find the singing of K L Saigal the funniest of them all.

Ye zindagi hai yo-yo

When I was a kid, I obviously loved to play with toys. One toy that I loved was the one that had a round object attached to an elastic string. You held one end of the strings to your hand and threw the round object away, which would come back to your palm again. This back and forth motion of the object where the object, despite being thrown away always came back to you, like a bad coin or an obedient dog, was a source of great amusement to kids like me.

“Chhabili” (1960) was a movie that Shobhana Samarth had produced to launch the career of her second daughter, viz Tanuja. One decade ago, she had similarly launched the career of Nutan, her eldest daughter with a movie called “Hamaari Beti” (1950).

“Daastaan” (1950) was a movie starring Suraiyya, Raj Kapoor, Suresh,Veena, Shakeela etc. The movie had some nice songs in it.
