Today, 31st July, is Rafi saab’s death anniversary. It is a date that evokes emotions in many Rafi saab fans even thirty years after his death. Many of them, especially if they are in their 50s or more, will remember the 31st of July 1980 as one of those “where were you on that day?” events, associated in the past with JFK’s assassination in 1963 and the successful moon-landing in 1969, and more recently with 9/11 or India’s own 26/11.

With this post, we are celebrating the 4300th song on this blog. Keeping a fairly sharp pace, at the rate of about 6 or 7 songs per day, we reached this latest century milestone within 16 days of touching the 4200 mark. Congratulations to all.

“Howrah Bridge” (1958) was a landmark movie in the annals of Hindi movie club songs. This movie had not one but two club songs that went on to become immortal clu songs. One was of course the Helen song Mera naam Chin Chin Choo and the other was the Madhubala song Aayiye meharbaan (Howrah Bridge) .

“Nayaa Kaanoon” (1965) was a movie starring an over the hill Bharat Bhushan with Vyjyanti Mala. This movie was a box office disasater.
As a result, the songs of this movie suffered. So much so that few people are aware of these songs. It is a pity because these songs are so nice to listen to, and they would have done well had the movie done better.

I know about many older movies, but frankly I had never heard of this movie called “Sitaaraa” (1980). I became aware of this movie and its songs only because of the lyrics of this song sent by Prakashchandra.

Most music lovers, including myself, would think that O P Nayyar’s best phase as a music director was the 1950s. Indeed, professionally he ruled the roost in the 1950s, so much so that many other established music directors too were instructed by their producers to create O P Nayyar kind of music. and we have in fact noticed the music of some other music directors resembling O P Nayyar music in that decade.

O P Nayyar was at the peak of his musical and professional prowess in 1950s. By 1960s, he was on the decline. But even then, he continued to create some sublime music till late into 1960s. I in fact feel that his compositions are arguably of better quality, even if they did not become as popular as his compositions of 1950s.

There may be more Hindi movies called “Laila Majnu” than one can count, but the two main movies of this title that I can readily recall are the ones that came in 1953 and 1976. The 1953 movie had Nutan and Shammi Kapoor playing the legendary lovers while the same roles wre enacted by Ranjeeta and Shammi Kapoor’s nephew Rishi Kapoor , respectively.
