Chale thhe saath milkar

To this date, I have not been able to understand how Shashi Kapoor survived for so long as a hero. I have noticed that most of his sucessful movies succeeded because he figured in multi starrers, where other stars carried the movie on their shoulders. And on the few occasions where Shashi Kapoor was the solo hero, the movie succeeded because of the music rather than because of Shashi Kapoor’s great histrionics. Do not tell me that “chor Machaaye shor”, for instance owes its success to Shashi Kapoor, and not to its music.

While researching Shammi Kapoor’s songs, I was interested to find out who, apart from Rafi, had given playback singing for Shammi Kapoor. I came across a few songs sung by Manna Dey and Mukesh. May be I may find songs sung by a few more male playback singers.

Rajshri Productions movies of 1970s tended to have their music ( as well as lyrics) by Ravindra Jain, till Ram Laxman took over in 1980s. In that respect, “Uljhan”, a 1975 Rajshri Productions movie was an exception. Its music was composed by Kalyanji Anandji whereas M G Hashmat was the lyricist.

Amitabh Bachchan movies in 1970s tended to have quite a few songs about friendships. In fact, I can readily count 4-5 such songs off the cuff – from Zanjeer, Sholay etc. In fact, two of his movies containing such songs had their titles like “Yaaraana” and “Dostana”. 😉 Another actor “specialising” in movies with such titles was Shatrughan Sinha, who in addition to figuring in “Dostana” was there in “Dost” as well.

I have listened to this song many a times and it appears a typical Raj Kapoor movie song all the way. It is obviously sung by Mukesh. And I was convinced that Shailendra and Shankar Jaikishan have to be the lyricist and Music directors respectively. So I was mightily surprised to know that I was off target. The lyricist for this movie Chhaliya is Qamar Jalalabadi and the music director duo is Kalyanji Anandji for this movie. And I must say that they have done very good imitation of Shailendra and Shankar Jaikishan, who were they the top lyricist and music director in Bollywood.

Raja of Jhumri Tilayya, oops, Holland, keeps wondering why I did not post this song, and whether I did not like this song. Rest assured , Raja, I like all songs of Shammi Kapoor, or for that matter, songs picturised on any other actors, and there is no way I would not have liked this song.

In Bollywood movies, hero woos the lady by singing a song, where he may make tall promises (I will love you for hundred births, I will turn the world topsy turvy for your sake etc). Then there are songs where the boy teases the girl, and the girl, despite taking serious exceptions, somehow begins to respond to hero’s advances as the song progresses.
