Meena Kumari is typecast in many people’s mind as a tragedy queen, but there were days when she used to play happy bubbly roles. For instance, I have watched her in “Miss Mary” and how cute and pretty she looks in that movie playing a normal female possessing a sense of humour. How dearly I would love to see her in similar roles.

I have watched the movie “Miss Mary” and I loved the movie. In fact, I liked its songs as well. The situation under which ths song is sung is quite a romantic situation. Gemini Ganeshan and Meena Kumari are posing as a married couple for the sake of their job,and their employer,Raybahadur feels that they are not spending enough time together as befits a married couple, so locks them up in their bedroom.

This is one song that I just loved to listen to, when I paid attention to its lyrics. The lyrics by Shakeel Badayuni captures the feelings of a newly married typical India woman of those days beautifully. The words in the lyrics are so cute and realistic, and they are the kind of words that are used in rural areas of UP.

The music of “Pakeeza” though considered outdated by the standards of 1970s by aam janta ( like yours truly) became surprisingly popular. Two of the songs from this in movie in fact became second and third in Binaca geetmala final of 1972.

I was a school kid less than 10 years of age, when Pakeejah was being released, and believe it on not, even us pre teens used to discuss Pakeejah in our class, how this movie was going to be Meena Kumari’s best performance, how this movie was supposed to be a magnum opus, etc. We all knew that this movie was in the making for many years.

“Dil ek mandir” is one of those musical blockbusters that were common in 1950s and 60s, where almost every song would become very popular and even evergreen.

I have heard this song “ruk jaa raat thahar ja re chanda” many times, often without knowing which movie the song is from. I have never seen the movie, and I had not seen the video of the song either till recently.
