VINTAGE SHAMSHAD BEGUM….Song No. 4
————————————–
Today’s song is from film Doosri Shaadi-1947. This is a duet with Ram Kamlani.
“Shaadi” seems to be quite a favourite Title word for Hindi film producers. There are very funny Titles with the word Shaadi. To start with, there was a film called ” Third wife ” made by Madan Theatres in 1931-the First year of Talkie films in India. Those days Polygamy was very common ( and why not ? King Dashrath of Ramayana had also 3 wives. Even in Mythology Lord Krishna had an astronomical figure of 16008 wives. Mortals today are struggling to manage even ONE wife ! ). Doosri Shadi was made in 1947 and then it was followed by a move practicable Pehli shaadi in 1953. So the number finally came down to a manageable number.

Today’s song is from film Ratnavali-45. Not a very well known name. Even in those days,it was not a film known by many ! But it had very good songs. This was a costume film made by Amar Pictures.
Amar Pictures was owned by Chimanlal Desai- who had established Sagar movietone in 1930 along with Dr. Ambalal Patel. Both were actually in Distribution business, but they entered film production line with the help of Ardeshir Irani of Imperial Film Company. Dr. Patel left Sagar around 1936 to go back to his Distribution business again and Chimanlal left Sagar in 1939 to form National Studios, joining hands with RCA’s Yusuf Fazalbhoy.

The song “Inhi logon ne le leenha dupatta mora” is associated by most music lovers with “Paakeezaah”(1972) which was sung by Lata and composed by Ghulam Mohammad. But this song had first appeared three decades ago, viz in 1941 where this song was sung by Shamshad Begam under the music direction of Pt Govindram for “Himmat”(1941). This blog contains the “Paakeezah”(1972) version as well as the “Himmat”(1941) version of this song.

The next such song came up in 1956 which was Chana zor garam babu main laayaa mazedaar in “Naya Andaaz”(1956). The next “Chana zor” song came up in “Kraanti”(1981).

Chaandni raaten – song no. 14
———————————
In one of the earlier posts in this series, I mixed up two songs ‘aadha hai chandrama raat aadhi’ and ‘chal jaa re hat natkhat’. There was more than one regulars on the blog who volunteered with the correction. It is a good sign, that small talk that I make in my posts are being read at least. 🙂 The comments containing additional information about the movie, lyricist and words of appreciation are motivating, even if not always replied to individually.
