Today 24th May 2025 is the seventieth birthday of music director-lyricist Rajesh Roshan(born on 24.05.1955). His music composed for Hindi movies is part of growing years of people like me who were born in late sixties or early seventies. Many of his compositions have been pure nostalgia for me and same might be the case for many people like me. Rajesh Roshan has carved a niche for himself in the history of Hindi Film Music. There is a long list of his compositions that I like very much, and as and when possible I have also shared such songs on this blog.

There are movies that are well made with good story line. I, who considered myself as a moviegoer with highbrow taste ( 🙂 ) liked such movies. For example, I liked movies like Sholay, Deewaar, Don etc. Then there are movies with silly story lines that low brow audiences liked but I did not.
Some of these silly story line movies went on to become big hits whereas some movies flopped.

‘Chandamama’ was a children’s monthly magazine known for its illustrations, long running mythological and magical stories. I was a huge fan of it & used to be gifted with a copy of it, as reward, for good showing in curricular & co-curricular activities. I had a collection of those books along with a few editions of Champak, Phantom, Mandrake, Tarzan & Amar Chitra Katha, like most children of those times.

“Ginny Aur Johny-1976” was directed by Mehmood for ‘Balaji Arts, Bombay’. It was produced by Amarlal P Chhabria. The cast of this movie has Ginny (debutant, Mehmood’s real life daughter), Mehmood, Helen, Bhushan Tiwari, Preeti Ganguly, Naushir Khatau and others. There were several actors who appeared in friendly appearance in this movie. They included Rajesh Khanna, Hema Malini, Randhir Kapoor, Rishi Kapoor, Vinod Mehra, Amjad Khan, Kati Mirza, Imtiaz, Tiwari, Asit Sen, Keshto Mukherjee, Anwar Ali, Nazeer Hussain, Anwar Hussain, Sundar, Mukri, Chand Usmani, Shyama, Ruby Myers (Sulochana), Nana Palsikar, Leela Mishra, Polson, Mohan Choti, Peelu Wadia, Shobhana, and Lucky.

“Doosra Aadmi” (1977) was directed by Ramesh Talwar & produced by Yash Chopra. Rakhee Gulzar- Neetu Singh- Rishi Kapoor formed the core cast with Deven Verma, Satyen Kappu, Gita Siddharth, Sheetal, Jagdish Raj, Roopesh Kumar, Yunus Parvez, Vikas Anand etc. playing supporting characters. Parikshit Sahni had a special appearance & Shashi Kapoor was in a guest appearance. Rajee Singh (Neetu Singh’s mother in real life) & Kiran Vairale had tiny roles (blink & miss appearances).

It goes without saying that Ameen Sayani was easily one of the most important personalities in the field of HFM. ‘Paapa Kahte Hain’ (1996) was produced by Plus Films (of Mahesh Bhatt and Amit Khanna) and was directed by Mahesh Bhatt. The cast included Jugal Hansraj, Mayuri Kango, Anupam Kher, Tiku Talsania, Navni Parihar, Alok Nath, Reema Lagoo, Suhas Joshi, Soni Razdan, Javed Khan, Dinesh Hingoo, Abhimanyu Singh, Sujata Kango, Johny Bakshi etc. The film was planned as a tele-film. However, when the main cast was finalised, it was decided to make it a feature film with Jugal Hansraj and Mayuri Kango in the lead roles. While Jugal Hansraj had already worked in a lead role in ‘Aa Gale Lag Jaa’ (1994), for Mayuri Kango, it was her first film in the lead role and her mother, Sujata Kango also acted in this film.

“Kaash” (1987) was produced by Anwar Ali & F.K. Rattonsey & directed by Mahesh Bhatt. Dimple Kapadia- Jackie Shroff- Master Makrand Joshi formed the main cast, with Anupam Kher playing a character that was important for the story viz. he played the third angle of the love triangle; of course Jackie & Dimple were the other two angles. Akash Khurana, Dalip Tahil, Mehmood, Mukri, R.S. Chopra, Kamal Chopra, Avtar Gill, Satish Kaushik, Vikas Anand, Subbiraj, Raju Kher all had small important parts to play; tagged as either special or guest appearance in the titles of the film.
