‘Bahubali’ (2015) was followed by ‘Bahubali- The Conclusion’ (2017). It was re-released in 2025, to celebrate 10 years of ‘Bahubali’, with the two parts combined and was called ‘Bahubali- The Epic’.

‘KGF – Chapter 1’ released in 2018; ‘KGF – Chapter 2’ came in 2022 and apparently a sequel to ‘Chapter 2’ titled ‘KGF – Chapter 3’ that was teased into the second film is in developmental stage.

The above two films along with ‘Pushpa’ and its sequels are all made in South India and were released simultaneously across India, dubbed into all possible Indian languages and were also well-accepted by the audiences.

(I have not seen the above films, don’t feel like seeing them too.)

‘Badi Maa’ (1974) was produced by GD Agarwal and directed by Ram Gabale. The cast included Usha Kiran, Surekha, Dilip Raj, Purnima, Jagirdar, Karan Diwan, Gulab, Iftekhar, Shivraj, Chaman Puri, Rashid Khan, Johny Whisky, Krishnakant, Dr. Vasantrao Deshpande, SD Narang, Baby Guddi etc. Probably, the film had a restricted theatrical release as I have never heard of this film. The film is in black and white which indicates that it was a delayed film.

There were some Hindi films which either flopped or just made it to be the average performers at the box office after they had theatrical release. But over the years, they have attained the status of cult classics. The films in my minds are, Chetan Anand’s ‘Neecha Nagar’ (1946) for pioneering the parallel cinema, Raj Kapoor’s ‘Jaagte Raho’ (1956) for its social commentary, Guru Dutt’s ‘Kaagaz Ke Phool’ (1959) for its cinematic style, Dev Anand’s ‘Guide’ (1965) for its progressive themes, Raj Kapoor’s ‘Mera Naam Joker’ (1970) for its philosophical depth and ‘Jaane Bhi Do Yaaron’ (1983) for raising a couple of serious issues facing the country in a satirical way. The list is not exhaustive. I also feel that I should add ‘Shakti’ (1982) in this list for the powerful performances of Dilip Kumar and Amitabh Bachchan as father and son, respectively who are in the opposite side of the law.

Today’s song is from a flop, obscure film, with a good star cast – ‘Garibi’ (1949).

Based on overall rating, there are 3 types of films….
1) Memorable Films – due to powerful story, acting, direction or music.
2) Films refreshed by memory when referenced in later years – films popular or hit for a short period and then forgotten till referenced in later years.
3) Totally forgettable films – from day one, due to poor/weak/unbelievable story, direction, music or outdated theme.Top actors, directors or MDs also can not save the film.

Today’s song is from a social film ‘Rangeeli’ of 1952.

1952 was a year which was going through a lean period for Hindi films. Increased costs of film production, escalating rates of stars and music directors, establishment of star system in place of earlier studio system, increasing taxes, decreasing number of cinema halls etc caused a worry in the film industry. Financiers with black money were making films – in 1952 the number of Hindi films made went up to 105 from 97 of 1951, but dropped again to 98 in 1953. Most films were of lower quality. Because of superior music there were some great films too, but the situation was grave nevertheless.
