Though I was born in a non Hindi speaking family and grew up in a Non Hindi speaking region, I was enrolled into a Hindi medium High school by my idealist father. There were many students from Uttar Pradesh and Bihar in the school whose parents were settled in Mumbai (then Bombay). Naturally, we spoke to each other in Hindi. But when they would talk among themselves, they would speak in languages that sounded somewhat different from Hindi. It was at that time that I came to know about the many dialects of Hindi such as Bhojpuri and Awadhi, Brijbhaasha, Maithili Magadhi etc.

This post will finally bring the ‘curtains down’ on the recent ‘Banglore – Gang out’ series. The memories of this ‘gang-out’ (and for me – of the visit to Bangalore) will remain with us forever though.
The post has been delayed, first for uploading of the image and then due to other occasional posts. It is now exactly a month for the gang out and already a new gang-out to be held at Mumbai is being eagerly looked forward to by regulars. Let us enjoy the memories of the Bangalaore gangout till then.

Hullo to all in Atuldom
A very belated Happy Diwali to all those who I missed to wish. Hope it was sweet and well lit for all. We are into the new Samvat and here is the first birthday.
We all know this birthday boy as a winner of 14 filmfare awards. He has a significant fan following in Asia and among the Indian Diasporas across the globe. He is one who dared to pick villainous roles early on in his career –something like say Vinod Khanna or Shatrughan Sinha of the previous generation. He is the pet of the film maker who is considered the king of romantic films in the current era. His paternal grandfather was a Pathan and the family moved to India post 1948. He grew up in Delhi and was educated from schools and colleges there but his road to fame and fortune began when he joined the Theatre Action Group and was mentored by Barry John. Oh yes I am speaking of Badshah alias Raj (naam toh suna hoga?) alias Rahul alias Shahrukh Kkkkhan –like the way he said KKKKiran in one of his early movies.

Lata’s Songs NOT YET covered on our Blog – 14
—————————————————
After that beautiful duet by Lata and Durrani from 1948 film Heer Ranjha, the next Lata’s Song NOT YET covered on our Blog is a song from 1948 film ‘Mandir’. I have tried to get that song from all the sources that I know of, and I am now not very much hopeful to get it. The next song in the line is from the 1948 Film ‘Majboor’.

There is one genre of songs that always has me hooked to it. And that is the qawwali.
I don’t know what exactly it is about the qawwali that has me so – I don’t think it is just one thing. Not just the music, or the lyrics, or the synchronized “clapping”, or the setting – I think it is all of these. The entire package, that fascinates me.
