Today (15 august 2016) is the 69th independence day of India.

With the passage of so much time, the general knowledge of younger generation about Indian freedom struggle and independence is no longer what it used to be in the past. One study mentions that the biggest source to make people aware of our independence day are patriotic songs from movies, followed by school text books.

Talking about Independence day from the comforts of our home six decades after we received it is one thing. Even daring to talk about independence when the country was under British Rule was considered treason and such daring people were severely dealt with by the British at that time .

The moment the image of Ameerbai Karnataki comes to my mind, I remember some of her most popular songs, mostly full of pathos, melancholy, and devotion. In fact, the most popular songs of her singing career come from these genres. She started her filmy career in 1934 as an actor-singer but realising that the potential for career as a playback singer was bright after the system of playback singing was introduced in Bombay film industry in 1937, she confined herself mainly to playback singing thereafter. After her songs in ‘Kismet’ (1943) became very popular, for the next five years or so, she remained one of the top playback singers. Of the total of around 375 songs she sang during her filmy career, more than 50% was accounted for during 1943-48.

“Heera Moti”(1959) was based on Munshi Premchand’s story “Do Bailon Ki Katha”. This is a story of two bullocks owned by a poor farmer couple.

The story is told from the point of view of the bullocks.

The movie was produced by Pravin Desai and directed by Krishan Chopra for Rupalaya production. The movie had Balraj Sahni, Nirupa Roy, Baby Naaz,Helen, Cuckoo, Ashim Kumar, Shubha Khote, P.Kailash, Rashid Khan, Baij Sharma, Moolchand, Charubala, Bhola etc in it.
