Missing Films of 1960s – 105
– – – – – – – – – – – – – – –

Slowly moving towards closure, we now have less than 10 more films to go for this series, for which songs are available. Then there is a whole batch of about 80 films from this decade, which seem to have disappeared without a trace (so far). I will give the statistics and other details when we come down to the closing post.

Today’s song is from the film Chandi Pooja-57.

The decade of the 1950’s was significant in HFM for many reasons. Firstly, this was the decade which saw the peak of the Golden Era of the HFM and also it witnessed the downward trend in the quality of music by the end of the decade. Secondly, those Music Directors who bloomed highest in the end of 40’s, slowly started their journey downwards. A glaring example is that of C.Ramchandra. At the same time, those Music Directors who had just started their ascent in the end period of the 1940’s, went to their Zenith, stayed there for a while and began their descent by early 1960s. Typical examples are Shankar-Jaikishen, S D Burman, Madan Mohan etc.

Missing Films of 1960s – 104
– – – – – – – – – – – – – – –

Yesterday, unbeknownst to myself, I crossed a personal milestone on the blog. I posted my 1300th article, and song. 🙂 The past few weeks, well, months – have been very slow as far as my activity on the blog is concerned. My last century milestone was – believe you me – full eleven months ago. I had crossed the the 1200th mark in May last year. And now it is April. The activity being so low, it did not even come to mind to check and see what my score was. And so, unmindful of it, I reached the 1300th post, and just posted the song.

Hullo to Atuldom

Today’s song/ post is to wish a Doe-eyed beauty on her birthday. At the when she was a busy movie star – starring in Bengali and Hindi movies – I had no clue about who she was, where she was from etc, and I didn’t care to find as at that stage in my life I was more of a watcher and not researcher. I have started trying to find things about the people who I used to like back then only now and I am amazed by the things I read and see.

So, today’s Bengali beauty was a convent school teacher to start of, who also tried her hand at modelling, participated in the Femina Miss India contest of 1971 and was judged Miss India World 1971. She went on to represent India at the Miss World 1971 and Queen of the Pacific pageant held in Australia where she was 1st runner-up. She also happens to be Anitha Guha’s niece. I am talking of the beautiful Prema Narayan- who made a name for herself playing Dhanno in the Uttam Kumar -Sharmila Tagore starrer “Amanush”. She was mostly cast as a dancer/ vamp or supporting roles with a western touch to her character. We remember her in songs of “Armaan”. “Ponga Pandit” etc as a person whose eyes are full of mischief.

Missing Films of 1960s – 102
– – – – – – – – – – – – – – –

As I checked the listings today, I find there still are a good about dozen films of 1960s, and this homework list, that are traceable, available and have to be covered. I was earlier thinking may be just four or five more to go. Ok so, abhi to we are in good stride here, and hope to complete the available list in the next about two weeks. 🙂

Missing Films of 1960s – 100

Ah, finally, we get to a new type of century today. This series of bringing on board the missing films of 1960s becomes the series that has clocked 100 posts – a first one for our blog. This series got initiated three and half years ago on 30th September, 2015, and we arrive at the century station for it, at the rate of about 2 to 3 songs per month on average. The pace could have been faster, yes, but well, we have what we have. 🙂

Missing Films of 1960s – 99
– – – – – – – – – – – – – – –

OK wow, we are at 99 for this series today. 🙂

The surprising thing is that this film is not yet on the blog. It is not obscure, it is not unfamiliar, it is not starring unfamiliar faces, it does not contain unfamiliar or unheard songs, and the songs are good to be heard. So then, how come?

Little earlier in the day, Atul ji mentioned about the timing of posting of Holi songs, and I quote,

Different festivals remain topical for different duration of time. If we do not post a write up within this time then the post loses its relevance. In case of Holi, it is the first half of the day mostly when people are mostly in festive mood, though it spills over to the afternoon as well.

As I am rushing to complete this post, it is already around 6 pm. Yes, the festivities for the day have been over for some time. Mostly the people have cleaned up and many would have had their afternoon siestas too. Maybe the only remaining sign of the festivities from earlier part of the day are the splashes of colored water on walls and floors, which most people would address tomorrow morning. Ah yes, another lingering evidence of the celebration could be some people still in the hangover of the bhaang, maybe still sleeping it off, or if awake, not yet back from the cuckoo land. 🙂

This post is coming somewhat late in the day, but the attempt is cover an important aspect of the celebrations of today. The festival of Holi, for ages now, has been intimately associated with the story of Lord Krishna. And so, the celebration somehow does not seem to be complete without having one song about Holi in Biraj, or Brij, the native place where the child Krishna grew up. There abound many a legends and folk songs that tell of the Holi celebrations when Krishna was in Brij. And the same has also been carried over into the Hindi films. Many a songs of Holi in Hindi films revolve around the stories and pastimes of Krishna.

India is a country of festivals. India is also a country of colours. So, it follows naturally that there should be a festival of colours as well in India. Indeed that is the case and that festival is called Holi.
