I am sure no one recalls this 1978 movie called “Tumhaari Kasam”. In fact I do not think this movie was ever released in the parts of the country where I was growing up in 1970s. But I recall having heard this song and liking it.

Now that I have rediscoverd this song, after all of 30 years- and with the video of the song to boot, I realise that this beautiful song was picturised surprisingly well.

“Generations to come will scarcely believe that such a one as this walked on the earth in flesh and blood.”
–Einstein

The above quotation by Einstein was said as a tribute to Mahatma Gandhi, arguably the most influential man of the 20th century. He helped change the fate of millions of people around the globe. When one looks at the major movements of the 20th century- viz anticolonialism, anti apartheid, non violence, and movement against untouchability ( the last one a uniquely Indian social evil)- Gandhi was the motive force/ originator behind all these major movements. And it goes without saying that these movements helped change the destiny of millions of people and scores of nations around the globe.

This blog has many songs sung with great enthusiasm by male singers. Here is a song sung with equal joie de vivre by a female singer. The singer is Asha Bhonsle and the dancer is Mumtaz. It is s killer combination. The movie is “Loafer” starring Dharmendra. This movie had many nice songs, and this song was perhaps the most suitable for those ladies who looked for a song to dance.

This song is a great discovery, I must say. This song is filmed on Danny, then an esoteric looking item of curiosity for Bollywood movie watchers. He looked every bit a chinky that his Sikkimese origin warranted, and moreover, he had yet to become accepted as an actor for mainstream roles. With time, his looks became accepted as mainstream, and he in fact started playing roles like Thakur saab, Heroine’s baap etc.

This fantastic song that has become a memorable song indelibly etched on the psyches of music lovers across the generations was a magical song when it was released in 1961. This song, picturised on Dev Anand and Sadhna has remained popular ever since. Few people have much idea about the movie ( Hum dono) or about the music director (Jaidev), but the song is one which was never forgotten, so there is no question of this song being not known to any bollywood music listener.

We have seen how true blue shayars like Hasrat Jaipuri, Majrooh etc could come up with funny lyrics leading to some great fun songs. Here we see Javed Akhtar, scriptwriter turned shayar, emulating his illustrious predecessors. Here lyrics are written in a common real life language, and not in the usual high sounding words. This was one of the first such songs as far as I can recall.

This song is preceded by some great funny scenes in the movie involving the hero and the heroine, and the fun continues in this song, when the two go to attend a wedding party.

I have an old diary where I noted down lyrics of songs that I liked those days ( in 1976). I find that many of the songs that I have written down in that diary are popular even today. On the other hand, some very popular songs of those days have been forgotten.

Here is one such forgotten song. Now a days when we are rediscovering old gems, here is my contribution towards that exercise. This song is certainly an old gem of R D Burman, which deserves to be cleaned and dusted, and put on display as one of the masterpieces of R D Burman.

If one is not aware of the details of the song, one may mistake it for an O P Nayyar composition. Punjabi sounding tunes and picturised on girls wearing Punjabi dresses, and sung by Asha Bhonsle- how can it be otherwise ?

But no, this catchy and racy tune was composed by S D Burman, assisted by his son R D Burman.

“Yaadon ki baraat” was a movie full of memorable foot tapping numbers. Its songs are what I would call party songs. These songs were sung in parties in the movie. In fact, the entire movie was full of parties and every party had one memorable party song.

One song that was extremely popular among teens like me was the song where the boy invites a girl to come to the stage. A dream situation for desi teens those days. No wonder I simply loved this song.
