Mumbai has been the leading Hindi film production centre in India ever since Dadasaheb Phalke produced the first silent film ‘Raja Harishchandra’ in 1913. After the release of India’s first talkie ‘Alam Ara’ in 1931, many more film production companies were set up in Mumbai, some of them owning the studios. The outdoor shootings, if any, in the initial stages of talkie films were done mostly in around Mumbai. It was quite natural that stories of some Hindi films would have Mumbai as the background portraying the many facets of the city. Obviously, in such films, there would be scenes from Mumbai and possibly one ‘Bombay-centric’ song.

“Gopichand”(1958) was produced by Ishwarlal and Prabhudas K Tanna and directed by Ishwarlal for Vasundhara Chitra, Bombay. This mythological movie had Shahu Modak, Shyama, B M Vyas, Prem Adib, Paro, Sundar, Malay Sarkar, Kesari, Salvi, Durga Khote etc in it.

Recently, I came across a very rare song from an unreleased film ‘Rustom Aur Sohrab’ (1940s). The song was uploaded on video sharing platform by Giridharilal Vishwakarma sometime in 2018. Despite an extensive search on the website, I could not get details about the film such as producer, director, actors etc. Probably, this film may have been one among many films that had become the victims of partition in 1947.

There are popular songs which have stayed with us from the first time we heard them. And we have some expectations from them. The song that Atulji posted yesterday is an example. When he heard the song he thought that the song was the handiwork of Anu Malik- David Dhawan- Govinda- Karisma Kapoor; he was right on two counts, only got the lead pair wrong. Similarly I have a song in my head which I thought was a Kishore Kumar-Asha Bhonsle duet. On referring various online sites I came to realize my mistake.

When I looked at the lyrics of this song, I quickly made some guesses about this song and its movie:-
1. This movie is directed by David Dhawan.
2. Music is by Anu Malik
3. The song is picturised as a chaalu dance song on the lead pair of Govinda and Karishma Kapoor.
When I watched the picturisation and saw the details of the movie, I found that I had hit the bulls’s eye on 1 and 2. I was wrong in 3. The song was picturised not on Govinda and Karisha Kapoor but on Akshay Kumar and Juhi Chawla.

Hindi Songs in Bangla Films – 24

‘Gali Theke Rajpath’ (Bangla film, 1959) was written and directed by Prafulla Chakraborty. The star cast included Uttam Kumar, Sabitri Chatterjee, Chhabi Biswas, Anup Kumar, Chhaya Devi, Tulsi Chakraborty, Bikash Roy, Shyam Laha, Sheela Paul, Helen, Jahar Roy etc. I have watched the video of a moderately edited film on one of the video sharing platforms. Probably, the film’s VHS tape was damaged as I found some ‘jumps’ in the continuity of the film’s story. Unfortunately, English sub-titles are not available. A short synopsis on the cover of the VCD of the film helped me to understand the film’s story in a proper perspective.

Let me tell you a bit about the background of this post. My nephew works as an RJ for a radio station and he has a slot called ‘Golmaal Gagan ne bol diya to bol diya‘, which is an audio review of latest movies. The way things are these days I am sure he goes through a lot of pain watching substandard movies. He praised a recently released movie called ‘Jawaani Jaaneman’ (2020). After listening to his review of this film I decided to watch it. Just as I was mulling over when to go to watch the movie, I got a message from our fellow Atulite Avinash. He wanted me to write up a bidaai song that was used in the film. Very kindly, he even sent me the lyrics of the song to help me.

If there was a category like ‘post inspired by fellow Atulite’ or ‘post inspired by Atulite WA group chat’, this post would have been included under that category. This past Sunday there was a discussion between me and Peevesie’s Mom ji regarding the theme of the ‘Rangoli’ this week, which was Jaya Bhaduri/Bachchan, and so I messaged to her that I was expecting a post from her. Instead, she asked me that even I can do a post. And she also pointed out the birth anniversary of actor Jeetendra (and so if there was a song of Jaya Bachchan and Jeetendra, it would have been suitable for the post).

Today’s song is from an old film Baaghi-1939. Same title films were also made in 1953, 1964, 1990 and 2000. In addition the word Baaghi was used as a prefix in few more films, like Baaghi Aurat-2000 or Baaghi Sipahi-36 etc .
