Missing Films of 1960s – 34
– – – – – – – – – – – – – – –
Yesterday, 25th July, was the anniversary of passing away of GS Kohli, the music director extraordinaire. He passed away in 1996, in Bombay.
A long time assistant music director to OP Nayyar, he had a short stint as an independent music director in the decade of 1960s. Despite a load of fantastic lilting songs in all his films – songs that became instant hits, very popular in their times, and still continue to be favourites of the lovers of the golden era of Hindi film music – he remained confined to B/C grade stunt films only. He continued to work as OPN’s assistant before, during and after his stint as an independent music director.

Happy birthday to you
Happy birthday to you
Happy birthday, dear atul-song-a-day blog
Happy birthday to you
🙂
Yes, it’s that special day of the year again. It’s our blog’s happy happy birthday. It was born on 19th July 2008, so today it completes 9 years. And we, wherever we are in the world, are definitely not going to let the occasion go by without celebration. Maybe we don’t have cakes and candles, but we have enough blog handles. 🙂 (Ok, admittedly, that was a terrible one!).

Today’s song is a fun song from the film Khota Paisa (1958). It is sung by Rafi, Shamshad and chorus. The film was one of those in which Johnny Walker was the Hero opposite Shyama. Johnny Walker was on the peak of popularity during that period. The film was produced and directed by M.Sadiq, under his own banner Sadiq Productions, Bombay. Music was by Madan Mohan.

This song is the 100th duet of Rafi Sb and Geeta Dutt to be posted here on our blog.
As I was browsing the net earlier in the day, checking for articles and source material on Guru Dutt, I came across this she’er (couplet) which was written by the poet Kaifi Azmi in 1964, on hearing the news of Guru Dutt’s demise.
रहने को सदा दहर में आता नहीं कोई,
तुम जैसे गए ऐसे भी जाता नहीं कोई
माना की उजालों ने तुम्हें दाग़ दिये थे,
बे रात ढले शमा बुझाता नहीं कोई
rehne ko sadaa dehar mein aata nahin koi
tum jaise gaye aise bhi jaata nahin koi
maana ki ujaalon ne tumhen daagh diye the
be-raat dhale shama bujhaata nahin koi
It is true, no one comes in this world
To reside for ever
But the way you departed
No one even leaves that way
Granted that the brightness of flame
May have inflicted painful burns
But still, no one douses the lamp
Before the night comes to an end
Remembering Guru Dutt, the vital genius of Hindi cinema, on his anniversary today (9 july 2017). Had he been alive, he would have been 92 today.

Today (9 july 2017) is the birth anniversary of Sanjeev Kumar (9 july 1938-6 november 1985), one of the true legendary actors of Hindi cinema.
Today, he would have been 79 – but sadly, he didn’t even get to live to the age of 50. He was just 47 when a heart attack took him away from this world, and from millions of his fans. Just like Guru Dutt (also coincidentally born on the 9th of July and who died way too early), Sanjeev Kumar’s death left a void in Hindi cinema.
