This is a song from the film Aplam Chaplam-1961. Talat and Lata sing with chorus, under the baton of composer Chitragupta.
If I ever make lists of composers under different headings like, Melody, Tune,Orchestra, Interludes etc, the first 5 names under the heading “Melody “would be, Ravi, Hansraj Behl, Khemchand Prakash, Anil Biswas and Chitragupta ( not as per any Rankings). Barring Anil Biswas, all the rest four composers never got enough name and fame despite making very melodious music. Chitragupta, Khemchand Prakash and Hansraj Behl got considerably less number of leading production house films compared to what they delivered, in my opinion.

Today (13 july 2015) is the 76th birth anniversary of Prakash Mehra (13 july 1939- 17 may 2009). He was a producer and director of Hindi movies. People growing up in 1970s grew up on a diet of Amitabh Bachchan movies which were produced and directed either by Manmohan Desai or by Prakash Mehra. It was in fact Prakash Mehra who helped create the legend of Amitabh Bachchan with “Zanjeer”(1973) ata time when Amitabh Bachchan was written off and he was on the verge of biddling farewell to his acting career. He was match point down ( as they say in tennis) when “Zanjeer”(1973) happened and he never had to look back again from ever since.

Waqt ki Deewar (1981) starred today’s birthday girl Sulakshana Pandit and birthday boy Sanjeev Kumar as the romantic pair. The other pair being Jeetendra with Neetu Singh (yesterday’s birthday gal). The supporting cast included Pran-Kadar Khan- Amjad Khan-Satyen Kappu-Preeti Ganguly-Paintal etc. {What a support system} The movie was directed by Ravi Tandon; T C Dewan was the producer, Laxmi Pyare were the music directors and Anjaan the lyricist. The movie was a typical run-of-the mill LOST AND FOUND drama where the heroes Munna and Vikram get separated after their mother’s death. One of them becomes a conman the other is looked after by Pran and becomes a police inspector (how original). Through the movie their paths keep crossing but they are unaware of each other’s identity till the last half an hour of the movie. Poor chaps!! But the movie makes us sit through close to two and half hours by which time Pran dies in making the two understand that they are brothers, the brothers find their father (Kader Khan) and their love interests. All izz well in the end.

Today (9 july 2015) is the 77th birth anniversary of Sanjeev Kumar (9 July 1938 – 6 November 1985). In a movie world where most actors were afraid of playing roles other than the ones they were typed cast in, Sanjeev Kumar would play any kind of roles, without worrying about his past image as an actor. He would play the roles that other heroes would not touch with a barge pole, and he would carry them off with aplomb. He had played roles of mentally challenged man (in Khilona-1970), Deaf and dumb (in Koshish), father of an actor older than him (father of Shashi Kapoor in Trishul), Husband, father as well as father in law of the same actress (Jaya Bhaduri) in different movies, etc. And I have not yet mentioned his role of Thakur in Sholay (1975). In “Naya Din Nayi Raat”, he played nine roles !
In brief, Sanjeev Kumar was an actor who never allowed himself to be typedcast. He accepted any kinds of roles, not worrying how that role was going to affect his image. And he came up with flying colours in all these roles.

The name Neetu Singh conjures up an image of a very bright and charming and ever smiling beauty. She started her life in Bollywood at a very young age – she was only 8 when we see her name appear as a child actor, in two 1966 films – ‘Suraj’ and ‘Dus Lakh’. However, the lasting memories are of her double role of twin sisters, separated on account of their parents’ discord, as Baby Sonia, in “Do Kaliyan” (1968). The image of a small child girl with double plaited hair [‘do choti’ sounds better, no? ;)] is still retained in our mind’s eye singing “Bachche Mann Ke Sachche” in Lata Mangeshkar’s voice.

What do film stars do when they retire or stop working ?
Actually, the artistes can be divided into two parts. One, those who stop working voluntarily or retire by choice and Two, those who stop getting work and are compelled to retire. Of course the first category has definite plans post retirement, so they do what was planned. However those who stop getting work or are compelled to call it a day have either to fall back on their savings or do something else to survive.

The Voice of Mukesh #69
– – – – – – – – – – – – – –
Such discoveries do not happen often. Finding unknown songs that one is not aware of. Today is one such occasion, and this Mukesh song is one such song. And the credit for searching it out and sending it to me, goes to Mahesh ji Mamadapur. A simple email from him yesterday – saying that he has found a song online that he cannot locate on the blog. Since we have definitely covered and accounted for, all songs of Mukesh till the mid 1950s, how come this song from the 1948 film ‘Mera Munna’ does not appear on our blog? I scrambled to check, and I found the following.

I am sure you must have heard the names of Music Directors Fakir Muhammed, Shambhoo, Dattaraj, Brij Bhushan, Raj Ratan, Ronodev Mukherjee, Kamalkant and Vishnu Khanna.
No ? I am surprised. OK. At least you must be knowing Music Directors Ajay, Baboo Singh or Vijay Honavar ? Your blank face says, you have never heard their names.
I am not asking you names of Music Directors from the 1930s or 1940s. All these were composers in the 1960s. If I ask you about Satyam, Jagdish or Ratandeep-Hemraj, what will you say ?
These were Music Directors in the 1970s. They composed music for 5 to 15 films each in the 70s.
