Today (23 january 2014) is the 117th birth anniversary of Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose. His contribution in fighting for the freedom of the nation was second to none, even if his contributions towards the freedom struggle have not received as much prominence as it should have. “Aaina”(1944) was an R D Production movie. This movie was directed by S M Yusuf. The movie had Trilok Kapoor, Husn Bano, Kaushlya, Yakub, Gope etc in it.

Here is a song from this movie. This song is sung by Zohrabai Ambalewaali and Gope. Pt Phani is the lyricist. The movie had two music directors in it viz Gulshan Soofi and Fateh Ali Khan. Both names are attributed against this song which means that the music director of this song is not known.

‘Do Khilaadi-1973’, ‘Double Cross-1973’ and ‘Tofaan-1975’??

No! Nothing similar among these three films, Except that I got to watch these films back to back during our stay at a small town on one of the tour programmes accompanying my parents for their plays (my parents used to act in Marathi plays).( And this may be in 1975-76).

During my early teen days, I was watching movies at the rate of 8 – 10 movies per week. It did not matter whether it was a new movie or an old movie or a repeat. I somehow had to be in a cinema hall between 11.30 AM and 2.30 PM. Sounds very adventurous, right? Yes it was, believe you me, but that was the craze of the movies, both Hindi and English.

After ‘Devdas’(1935), the most talked about film of New Theaters-P C Barua combination was ‘Mukti’ (1937). It was a path breaking film. It had a bold story relative to the time period and the new techniques of direction. It is claimed that ‘Mukti’ (1937) is the first film which was extensively shot outdoors in the forest of Gauripur (Assam). It was also the first film in which Gurudev Rabindranath Tagore’s poems were used for the songs in the Bengali version based on his tunes. Incidentally, when the untitled story of the film was narrated to Gurudev Rabindranath Tagore, he gave this movie its title viz. ‘Mukti’.
