“Dil Diya Dard Liya” (1966) is an archtypical Dilip Kumar movie. At least that is how it appeared to me when I became aware of this movie in my younger days. What does one say about a film named ‘Gvaalan’ (Milkmaid) that was released 1946, exactly 65 years ago? Obscure, unknown, rare are the words that come to mind. Looking for early films of Hansraj Behl, I came across a few songs of this film in my collection, that are undoubtedly rare – and not yet published anywhere. As per the history of Hansraj Behl’s films, this film is one of the three films released in 1946 for which this music director has composed the music. Going by this information, this can very well be his debut film. The other two films released in 1946 with music by him are ‘Pujaari’ and ‘Phulwaari’.

There were three top heroes in Hindi movies in 1950s. Of them, viz. Raj Kapoor expired in 1980s and Dev Anand just a few days back. One of them, viz Dilip Kumar is still around. He in fact is celebrating his 89th birthday today. He was born on 11 th december 1922 in Peshawar, now in Pakistan. He made his debut in Hindi movies with “Jwaar Bhata” (1944) and his made his mark as a hero with “Jugnu” (1947) and soon he became a hot property in Hindi movies and earned him the sobriquet of “Tragedy king”. It is not an accurate description, becuase he has worked in several light hearted movies as well.
