Hullo Atuldom

18th July 2012- nine years to the date since the first superstar of Bollywood passed away. An actor who charmed his way into the hearts of his (female) fans with a smile that reached his eyes and could express his emotions with his eyes.

The style with which he said “Pushpa, I hate tears”. Or the the way he said “why are you roing?” to his girlfriend (Farida Jalal) who has come to wish him ‘all the best’ as he is leaving for the war.

Kishore Sahu, actor, producer, director and story/screen-play/dialogue writer must be a dynamic, ambitious and resourceful person. Otherwise, how could one explain the pace at which he turned producer after the release of only one film? He started his acting career with a lead role in Bombay Talkies’ ‘Jeewan Prabhat’ (1937). One film old Kishore Sahu set up a film production company, India Artists Ltd. As a managing director of the company, he produced ‘Bahurani’ (1940) which was released in June 1940. The film was commercially successful.

Browsing the blog always brings some surprises for me and reminds me of some forgotten songs. There are movies where some of their songs are very popular and familiar, while the some songs from these films remained unexplored and forgotten.

Today’s movie is one such example.

Today’s song is from the film Mazdoor-1945, made by Filmistan. The film was directed by Nitin Bose (26-4-1897 to 14-4-1986).

After leaving New Theatres, Calcutta due to a dispute with B.N.Sircar, he decided to shift to Bombay. His dispute with Sircar was so bitter that Nitin Bose did not even see his last directed film ” Kashinath”-1943, till the end of his life. Before he came to Bombay, his name had already become famous here and many big studios were eager to employ him.

Sixty-five years have passed since ‘Jhanak Jhanak Paayal Baaje’ (1955) -JJPB for short – was released. I had seen the film in a theatre in South Mumbai either in 1955 or 1956 (this film had run for nearly 2 years in a single theatre in Mumbai). But I had no recollection of much of the film. It was only after I watched some parts of the film on the video sharing platforms over a period of time, I could connect some scenes from the film I saw in my childhood. The film still evokes interest of the cinema lovers especially of those who relish the classical dance/music.

Today’s song is from a very obscure film Lieutenant-1944 ( It is pronounced as लेफ्टनंट ). It was actually a stunt film, belying the film title, which misled the readers thinking that this was a War film ! The only connection of this film with War was perhaps that this film was made during the II WW period.

Playback singing was introduced for the first time in Hindi films for a song in New Talkies’ ‘Dhoop Chhaaon’ (1935) under the music direction of R C Boral. The song main khush hona chaahoon was sung by Parul Ghosh, Suprobha Sarkar, Harimati and K C Dey. In Bombay film industry, playback singing was introduced for the song ‘jeewan hai ek kahaani’ in Sagar Movietone’s ‘Mahageet’ (1937) which was sung by Anil Biswas under his own music direction. Unfortunately, gramophone record for this song was not issued.

Dilip Kumar – The Legend (1922-2021)
——————————————————

Since last two days I have been watching the various videos on whatsapp and on the net and also read some articles on the net. I have tried to see and absorb as much of the information I could about the events after, when the thespian is no more. After all is said and done, I have tried various tacks on how to approach this tribute to the method actor, who some call the “Marlon Brando” of India, without the ferociousness. But I find a ferocious, peasant turned dacoit in ‘Ganga Jamuna’ and a fractioned rebel prince Salim who is equally ferocious in protecting his Anarkali. The work on the silver screen was a very important part of the personality, but by no means it was the whole personality.
