Raghuvaran- a name not many followers of Hindi films may be familiar about. Maybe if I list out some of the Hindi films that he acted in, Hindi Film Fans (HFF) will recognize him by the characters he played. He was popular in films made in Tamil, Telugu, Kannada & Malayalam. He had a with his special style and voice modulation. He played mostly negative or grey-shaded characters. Like all aspirants into the film industry, his first films had him play the main protagonist, but these met with little success. ‘Silk Silk Silk’ in which he played a villain opened the floodgates of offers for him and he got a spate of Tamil films.

Hullo Atuldom

The first song that I had sent to Atulji for posting today was from a film that had Sharmila Tagore’s character playing mother to Saif Ali Khan’s character in a 1993 film .

The song in this post is also similar. It has Dharmendra playing father to Sunny & Bobby Deol- his real life sons. Before this 2007 film the father-son duo of Dharmendra-Sunny had worked together in “Sultanat”, “Sunny” (no screentime together), “Saverewali Gaadi” and “Kshatriya”. Bobby & Sunny Deol had worked together in “Dillagi” in 1999.

Hullo Atuldom

I love to see films in which actors who are siblings, parents with the actor or related in someway with the actor, cast in important roles. There are umpteen such films in India – in all languages. The film, in this category, that I really love to see (and have seen many times) is “Kal Aaj Aur Kal” which had the whole Kapoor Khandaan enacting their real-life relationships. Additionally, it had Babita who went on to become the daughter-in-law of the family, just as in the film. Then there is “Zamaane Ko Dikhaana Hai” which had Randhir & Rishi Kapoor playing brothers. There was one more movie in 2012 -“Housefull 2”- that had the two playing brothers who are constantly competing with each other etc.

Ghulam Ali is a singer who is an idol of music lovers across India & Pakistan and the diaspora of the two countries. He was born on 5th December 1940 in Sialkot of undivided India.

His name ‘Ghulam Ali’ was given by his father, a great fan of Bade Ghulam Ali Khan who, in the past, used to live in Lahore. Ghulam Ali had always been listening to Khan since childhood.

Hullo Atuldom
The song in this post should have, ideally, been posted yesterday or the day before. But like the phrase says ‘Better Late Than Never’. And, I am not giving any excuses for the delay. 🙂

The song features the Ever- not Green- but Young (at heart) Dev Anand in what was his last lead role in a film that was neither produced nor directed by him. Prior to this, he had acted in ‘Amir Garib’ in 1975, which was produced & directed by Mohan Kumar.

‘Chandamama’ was a children’s monthly magazine known for its illustrations, long running mythological and magical stories. I was a huge fan of it & used to be gifted with a copy of it, as reward, for good showing in curricular & co-curricular activities. I had a collection of those books along with a few editions of Champak, Phantom, Mandrake, Tarzan & Amar Chitra Katha, like most children of those times.

Hullo Atuldom

Remembering Nirmala Nagpal today on her birth anniversary. She was born in Mumbai (Bombay back then) on 22nd November 1948. That gives us an idea that she must have been hardly 9 or 10 years of age when she danced in the chorus of the famous club-scene songs of “Howrah Bridge” (1958). She was just 3 years when she appeared in some films as baby Shyama & was a background (chorus) dancer in the late 1950s. She was all of 13 (not unusual for those times, I think) when she married the much-married & father of four -B. Sohanlal- a popular choreographer of that period. The couple separated in a few years but not before she had borne three children. Later, she married a businessman Sardar Roshan Khan, adopted Islam & changed her name to Saroj Khan – a name that gave her work & fame and was known by till she passed away on 3rd July 2020; due to cardiac arrest.

Hullo Atuldom

A few months back our in-house encyclopedia a.k.a Shri. Arunkumar Deshmukhji had given us a post. This post gave us information about the various actors, down the years, who were connected to successful artists of the film industry but who’s career could not proceed beyond their first few films. That list included Raj Kapoor’s son Rajeev Kapoor, Premnath’s brothers etc. I can add numerous names of the current generation, who had successful first films & medium-success in their next few films but could not produce hit films later in their career- IMO the biggest example being Kumar Gaurav (no hard feelings, I was mighty impressed by him in “Love Story” so many years back.
